The coastal city of Kerala, Kozhikode, is located at the distance of 225 km north of Kochi, an occupies an important position in the Keralan history. Also known as 'Calicut' it was once the formidable capital of the powerful Zamorins and one of the prominent trading capital during the ancient times. It is also important in the history of European involvement on the subcontinent, as Vasco-da-Gama -the Portuguese traveler landed here on the Kappad beach at Kozhikode, in 1498. Today, Kozhikode is a busy commercial town, known as the center of timber and boat building. Krishna Menon Museum :
Located next to the Pazhassi Raja Museum, Krishna Menon Museum, is the must visit on the tour to Calicut. It was established in the year 1975. The museum has an exclusive wing dedicated to the late V. K. Krishna Menon,reat orator and was the spokesperson for at the General Assembly of the UN.. His personal belongings and souvenirs are displayed here.
Pazhassi Raja Museum:
5 kms from Kozhikode is the Pazhassi Raja Museum, managed by the state Archeology Museum. It is absolute treasure trove for the historians and connoisseurs of art. The museum boosts of the copies of ancient murals, antique bronzes, old coins, excavated earthenware, models of temples, megalithic monuments like dolmonoid cysts, umbrella stones etc. Apart from that it also houses the paintings of Kerala's esteemed artists, Raja Ravi Varma, the reputed painter, whose work brought international fame to the tourists.
Kozhikode beach :
The most favorite adventure destination here is the Kozhikode beach. Its natural beauty and scenic environs are the paradise for the walkers. The main highlight of the beach is the old lighthouse and two crumbling piers running into the sea. Children can be entertained at the Lions Park and the Marine Water Aquarium. The sunset view from the Kozhikode beach is something not to be missed.
Velliyamkallu :
Tourists must make a visit to the Velliyamkallu, the massive rock, which was once a vantage point for the marakkars to attack the invading Portuguese. An entire crew of a Portuguese ship was killed here. The beautiful natural engravings on the rock are worth exploring.
