Northern Kerala

There are many things worth seeing in Northern Kerala. Start your tour with Kozhikode – the historical town in Kerala, move towards the famous Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary for the exotic wildlife safaris and finally Kannur, which is an important coastal town.

Kozhikode :

The coastal city of Kozhikode is located at the distance of 225 km from Kochi. It is the third largest city in Kerala. And was once the capital of powerful Zamorins. Formerly known as Calicut, Kozhikode is historically famous as the first Portuguese traveler Vasco da Gama landed in India, at Kappad beach near Kozhikode in 1498. Later on French, Dutch and British also landed here through the same route. Sprawling along the beautiful backwaters, tour to Kozhikode takes you on the tour to some of exotic beaches and ancient palaces. It is also a popular Ayurveda destination.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary :

Also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Wayanad forms the important part of the Northern Kerala. Spread to the total area of 344 sq km, it is located 18 kms from Sultan Battery. It was notified as the sanctuary in he year 1973 and is an extension of the Bandipur National Park at its southern border.

The sanctuary is most famous for its tigers and lions along with the other wildlife attractions that includes Panthers, Jungle Cats, Civet Cats, Monkeys, Wild Dogs, Bisons, Deer and Bears. Even the park has fairy good reptile population with large number of snakes and monitor lizards. It is also a popular for bird watching. Some of the exotic bird species found here includes Peacock, Babblers, Cuckoos, Owl, Woodpecker and Jungle Fowl.

Kannur :

Kannur is an important coastal town bounded by the western ghats in the east, Arabian sea in the wet, Kasargode district in the north and Ponicherry in the south. It is located at the distance of 310 km from Kochi. He city is most famous for the hand loom and beedi industries. It the headquarters of the country's largest and best seller beedi cooperative which produces the famous brand, Kerala Dinesh Beedi.

Some of the major attraction of Kannur includes Sundareswara Temple, Mavilakavu Temple, Urpazhachivaku Temple, Sasta Temple, Payyambalam Beach and Muzhapilangad Beach.
