Thrissur Travel
The scenic town of Thrissur, between the Kochi (74 km south) and Palakkad (79 km northeast), is a right place to discover the cultural riches of central Kerala. Thrissur was once the capital of the Cochin state, ruled by many rulers and dynasties starting with zamorins of Kozhikode, tipu sultan of Mysore and Europeans including the dutch and the british. Today it is the cultural capital of Kerala, home to several influential art institutions such as the Kerala Kala Mandalam, the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. It is one of the few places in Kerala where you are guaranteed Kathakali dance performance, both authentic and abridged tourists versions.
Thrissur Sightseeing :
Vadakkunathan Kshetram temple :
Vadakkunathan Kshetram is one of the oldest temple in the town. The temple was built in the 12 th century and consists of fifteen shrine. Depicting the classical example of the Keralan style of architecture, the temple boosts of the numerous pieces of art and decorative murals. Inside the walls, he grassy compound is a striking apsidal shrine dedicated to Ayappa. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter the temple.
Festivals :
The Vadakkunathan Kshetram temple is the venue of the popular Thrissur Pooram which falls in the month of April or May. It is the Kerala's biggest and most colorful temple festival. Devotees from far and wide throng the Pooram. The unique feature of this festival is the ceremonial processions carrying the images of the deities of 41 neighboring temples.
Eating :
Thrissur provides a goos range of hotels and restaurants offering Indian, Western and Chinese food along with the authentic Keralan lunches. There are several inexpensive hotels clustered near the Round.
Shopping :
Thrissur is a good place to pick up the Keralan crafts The main shopping area is on the Round, on Round West, the Kerala State Handicraft Emporium specializes in wood. Than there is Co-optex that sells the good range of hand loom cloth. At Chemmanur's Round South, near the elite hotel, you will find a good variety of carved wooden elephant type souvenirs.
