Sweet Spring Couture by Elie Saab

I know that the images from Elie Saab's phenomenal Spring 2012 Couture show will be posted on thousands of other blogs, but I couldn't help myself. It has left a lasting impression on me, with sensational gowns that are only imaginable in your wildest Midsummer's Night Dreams.

The maven of couture, Saab one again whets our fashion palates with a delectable array of dessert shaded designs, finely crafted with the utmost dexterity and impeccable detailing. Sheerness was a theme throughout, artfully ornamented by crystal floral appliqués and delicate hand beading. I've paired the designs with the sweet treats they remind me of. Enough from me, I'll let the dresses speak for themselves...they do so in volumes.

Sugar Cookies

Peppermint Tart

Bubblegum Milkshake

Candied Ginger

Paris Couture Fashion Week 2012

Paris Haute Couture Week 2012 officially opened it's doors on Monday to world class designers and stunning supermodels, displaying an array of exquisite clothes. This is an updated view of some of the most impressive collections. Click on the pictures for a larger view.

Versace

Donatella sent a small group of Glamazons down the Versace Haute Couture runway for the the first time in 8 years. Glistening dresses seemed to be moulded onto the models, with sculpted corsets, extended hip flounces and rounded strapless necklines. Subtle metallics paled in comparison to the striking shades of tangerine, yellow and lime. High pony tails and smokey eyes completed the glam-warrior looks. I wished for more pizazz, less shine.

Chanel

Azure skies to starry nights - every shade of blue was represented at Chanel's 2012 Couture showing. Models in faux mohawks and fascinators walked down the aisle, set to look like the inside of an airplane. Tweed dress suits in powder blue, drop-waists and pocket seamed shifts with high cuffed necks, a scattering of blue sequins that shimmered like the sun on an ocean wave. Longer length gowns were displayed in midnight blue and the palest shade of blue chiffon. A couture take on air hostess outfits - if only!

Giambattista Valli

The Giambattista Valli Couture show expressed sensual femininity: cream and black sheer lace dresses, petal-smothered skirts, sequins, satin and bows. I can picture someone like Olivia Palermo in the feathered frock, pictured second on the top row. Splashes of raspberry red, plum and fuchsia stole the scene with billowy evening gowns. Models wore elaborate floral headpieces, cohesively fitting in with the summery floral print gowns.

Christian Dior

Christian Dior's Haute Couture collection brings forth vintage-inspired shapes, from the swanky 50's to the more opulent Victorian era. A-line dresses were embroidered with floral designs, while pencil skirts were seen in houndstooth and grid prints. There was an interesting juxtaposition of 'heavy' sheerness. Layers and layers of see-through tulle were skillfully constructed into dramatic gowns with sizable skirts. Ruffles are certainly having a moment.

Armani Privé

Blue was to Chanel as green is to Armani this Couture season. Viridescent shades of green illuminated the striped catwalk, bringing with it chic reptilian-like jackets over mesh shirts and folded silk skirts. The under-the-sea extravaganza continued with a blinding neon gown rolled in sequins, graphic prints unfolded to reveal an inner black bodice, multi-layered mermaid gowns wrapped to resemble seaweed and a conspicuous shade of chartreuse which will ensure that this is an Armani range to be remembered.

Stephane Rolland

Stephane Rolland's Couture collection is one of my favourites from all featured in this post. Because he reimagined the basics, creating avant-garde designs and innovative silhouettes. Exaggerated origami-folds, geometric cut-outs, gold metal panelling, unfurling ruffles and architectural shapes. He chose to express these spectacular designs using a simple colour palette of black, white, red and lime green (which has been quite popular so far). Beautifully draped gowns swept the floor in silk jersey, gazar and organza. A masterful collection with an aura of confidence and allure.

Valentino
There was a feeling of regal antiquity surrounding Valentino's Spring Couture collection. If modern monarchy existed today as it did in the 18th century, I can imagine that this is what real-life princesses would wear. Prim white-to-ivory knee-length dresses, woven from the finest cotton and latticed lace. Feathery light floral frocks, demure as can be with high-frilled collars and sheer organza sleeves. A range that charms with it's maidenly grace.

Zuhair Murad
Zuhair Murad's Couture collection is 'glitzy as charged' for Spring 2012. Extravagantly beaded gowns were dipped in champagne golds and varnished metallics. Black floral embroidery was starkly contrasted with nude-tone slips, while hourglass-enhancing silhouettes were shaped to perfection. Crystal-embellished gowns featured plunging necklines and tails of tulle. It's luxury meets sensuality. I can see many a country-singing-star lapping this one up.

Dress Déja Vu

When I saw Kat Graham wearing this cobalt blue gown, I went back to my archives, thinking it was the same one Jessica Alba wore 10 months ago. But it isn't the same dress, just a serious case of copycat couture.

Left: Jessica Alba looked regal in this electric blue silk strapless gown with sweetheart neckline, empire waist and gathered maxi skirt. The gown, which is by Atelier Versace, was worn by Jessica on 13 February 2011 to the BAFTA Awards. She wore her hair up in a braided hairstyle, and added a gold, turquoise and blue necklace.
Right: Kat Graham wore a very similar gown last week (10 December 2011) at the 'Ripple Effect Charity Dinner'. Her blue micropleated silk dress is by couturier Lloyd Klein. It is also strapless, same shade of striking blue, with an empire waist and flowing floor-length skirt. The only major difference is the bandeau neckline and empire style. Kat wore her hair in voluminous waves.

I prefer Jessica's dress and styling. Do you think this is a blatant copy or just a coincidence?

Atelier Versace Fall 2011

Atelier Versace have released a magnificent range of couture gowns for Fall 2011. The collection finds its roots in Asian and baroque influences. Floor-sweeping gowns are lavishly adorned with crystal and sequin embellishments, while others bear the vintage Versace print. The different silhouettes are draped, cut-out, architectural and flowing.

I like the lack of cohesion in Atelier Versace collections. Each piece isn't a continuation of the next, but instead is a unique depiction of the brand's originality and ingenuity. Polish model Kasia Struss beautifully exhibits these looks; donning a blond beehive, dark smokey eyes and nude lips.

I like the pairing of teal and purple. The surprise element of this gown is the embellished detail upon the triangular cut-out on the back.

Unique and distinctive patterns are imprinted on dresses. The first one boldly shows off the Versace emblem, while the second one has an oriental-inspired dragon design.

You will recognize the light blue Mandarin-collared dress as the one Katy Perry wore to the MTV Movie Awards. The intricate beading seen on the close-up photo is exquisite.

Silk satin, chiffon and silk mousseline form the basis for these glamourous gowns.

These structured gowns amaze with their complexity and intricate leather engraving.

Off The Catwalk - Mila Kunis in Elie Saab

Mila Kunis

in Elie Saab Fall 2011 Couture

Moscow was bedazzled by Mila Kunis yesterday, who was there to attend the premiere of her new movie, 'Friends with Benefits'. The actress looked stunning in a dress from Elie Saab's Fall 2011 Couture Collection.

Mila wore an ivory knee-length tulle dress with sheer illusion bodice, which sparkled with sequins and Swarovski crystals. The shoulders were beautifully adorned with beadwork. Mila also wore the same Elie Saab heels as shown on the runway. I love the entire look, especially that she styled this fairy like dress with a tiara Alice band.

Who Wore Alexis Mabille Better?

Who Wore It Better?

Gossip Girl or Burlesque Star

Dita von Teese was spotted in Paris this week wearing a very memorable gown from Gossip Girl Season 4. I recall watching the episode 'The Wrong Goodbye' and loving Blair Waldorf's ornately embroidered dress. The decorative baroque gown is from Alexis Mabille's Fall Couture 2010 collection. The metallic gold and platinum bodice is intricately adorned with pink petals. The shoulders are accentuated with the same floral appliqués and tulle. The gown descends into a long black skirt. Blair wore her hair up with large stud earrings, whereas Dita favored her retro 1940's waves and drop earrings.

I am a huge Blair fan, but I have to say the gown looks better on Dita.
What do you think?

Elie Saab Fall Couture 2011

The exuberance of Elie Saab Couture was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week yesterday. I am mesmerized by his Fall 2011-12 Collection, which stays true to his opulent design aesthetic. Elie churns out glamourous goddess gowns unlike any other.

His latest range reminded me of the seaside. The aquamarine of early morning sky settling in over the ocean. The crisp whites like heavenly clouds floating above. The sandy shades that catch the sunlight and chocolate brown seaweed that lays upon it. Then there's the shimmering dark blue waves, reflecting off the starry night sky.

Gowns glistened with intricate beadwork, delicately sheer fabric was enlightened by a sea of sequins, and billowy chiffon sailed across the runway like a cool breeze. Ethereal white gowns were sprinkled with pearl-like embellishing.

If I could chose any gown from this collection, it would have to be the first one to the left. I love the sheer beaded fabric and vintage style.

Waists were accentuated by decorative floral motifs. Make up was kept natural with a barely-there look. Hair was swept up in waves.

The collection is one to marvel at, with each gown more beautiful than the next.
Elie Saab has retained his crown as 'King of Couture'.

Blake Lively in Chanel

Blake Lively in Chanel

Green Lantern Movie Premiere

Chanel mascot, Blake Lively attended the premiere of her new movie, 'Green Lantern' in LA this weekend. The actress wore an angelic white gown from Chanel's Spring 2009 Couture line. The short-sleeved dress is decorated with floral appliqués and has a sheer embroidered skirt. She wore her hair to the side in a tangled plait. It's nice to see Blake wearing something other than a short, fitted dress.

The Second Stylish Week at Cannes 2011

This Week's Style Assembly

from the Cannes Film Festival 2011

While the rest of went on with our normal lives, another stylish week at Cannes continued. Stars pulled out all the stops at the various events held in the French Rivera this week.

These are some of the highlights.

The classic black gown was given a twist with these four variations. Zoe Saldana was whimsical in a floral-print organza gown by Vionnet. I like the dress, just not the elasticated striped belt - it feels too casual. Gwen Stefani wowed in a shimmery fishtail gown with halter neck from her own fashion line, L.A.M.B. A gold belt accentuated her waist. Li Bing Bing wore a beautifully beaded gown by Zuhair Murad, with large chiffon bow and sash. Clemence Poesy's pleated black Chanel dress is an elegant pick, although I find the heels too high for the length of the dress.

Punchy colours brought vigour to the red carpet. Crowd pleaser Fan Bing Bing wore a pistachio green gown by Oscar de la Renta. The gown was volumized by gathered folds. I'm not fond of her Heidi-hairstyle. The stunning Alessandra Ambrosio wears an aqua Roberto Cavalli dress with embellished bodice. Actress Jessica Chastain was vibrant in a strapless sunflower yellow dress by Zac Posen. Model Bar Rafaeli donned a deep blue Roberto Cavalli gown, which fit impeccably. Her pulled back ponytail added to the sleek look. Asian actress Zhang Zilin was breathtaking in Elie Saab. The rose red chiffon dress features a lace-trimmed asymmetrical neckline and soft draping. For me, this look is perfection.

Muted tones were trendy at last night's Amfar Gala. Kirsten Dunst wore a hazy pink sheer gown with diamond shaped appliqués by Chanel. Michelle Rodriguez shows off the embellished back of her Jean Fares Couture dress. Such a pretty pale pink colour and the pockets add an interesting touch. Uma Thurman strikes a pose in a gracious grey Chanel gown with a row of roses on the neckline. Her dress also features pockets. Rosario Dawson shines in Roberto Cavalli. Her strapless dress has a silver sequined bodice and cream pleated skirt.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Elie Saab at Cannes

Sarah Jessica Parker

wearing Elie Saab Couture

Sarah Jessica Parker has redeemed herself after last week's fashion disasters. She attended the Cannes Film Festival in Elie Saab Fall 2011. The bold floral print crepe georgette gown stood out against the red carpet. The colours are so youthful, however it could have done without the embroidered lace.

Zuhair Murad Spring/Summer 2011

Zuhair Murad

Spring/Summer Haute Couture 2011

I can't believe I waited this long to do a feature on Zuhair Murad. When it comes to opulent evening gowns, Lebanese designers rule the runway. For his Spring/Summer 2011 Collection, Murad was inspired by the beauty of the African desert - sand dunes of the Sahara, cool blue oases and rich Egyptian gold. Brought together by luxurious fabrics, intricate details and excellent craftsmanship; the Hymne au Desert Collection is an outstanding one.

The mini dress goes from strapless to long-sleeves, coloured in golden sand, desert night sky and aquamarine. It is glamorized with exquisite beading and sequin trimmed sandals.

Goddess Gowns with mermaid silhouettes are scattered with gold leafing, paillettes, fringing and elaborate beadwork.

Fluid chiffon gowns in cool tones of sea green, aqua and yellow are decorated with gold embroidered motifs.

White togas, sprays of gold sequins, menat necklaces, metallic belts and wedding gowns fit for a desert queen.

Red Carpet Fashion

The 64th Annual Cannes Film Festival welcomed a bevy of international beauties at the Opening Ceremony event.

Uma Thurman wore a strapless white gown with feathered train by Versace. She added colour in the form of emerald earrings and bracelet.

Chinese actress Gong Li is exquisite in aubergine. Her mermaid gown with beautifully structured bodice is by Roberto Cavalli Couture.

Mexican beauty Salma Hayek owns the red carpet in Gucci Couture. The soft silvery gown has a beaded bodice with full pleated skirt.

Canadian star Rachel McAdams was unusual in a red embroidered silk organza gown by Marchesa. Her heels are by Casadei.

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai chose an asymmetrical beaded gown by Elie Saab Couture. She carries a clutch by Jimmy Choo.

Divas and Darlings - The Met Gala 2011

Red Carpet Fashion

The Met Costume Institute Gala 2011

The Annual Costume Institute Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the Oscar night of fashion. Everyone who is anyone attends, in their finest designer gowns, from the demure to the dramatic. This year, the theme of the exhibit was 'Alexander McQueen : Savage Beauty', which honoured the late designer. These are the divas, darlings and disasters of the evening.

Simple and Modern Silhouettes

Frieda Pinto wears a white silk gown by Chanel Spring Couture 2010. The dress is given a masculine twist with the addition of a black tie, high collar and wrist watch. Ginnifer Goodwin in an emerald silk Topshop dress with twist front and cut-outs. She contrasted it with navy Aperlai heels and Kotur clutch. Zoe Saldana dons a lovely lemon Calvin Klein gown. Brooklyn Decker went neon pink in a long-sleeved fitted Michael Kors dress with thigh high slit. The nude heels elongate her legs even more. Isla Fischer shines in a royal blue Tory Burch gown. Emma Roberts is elegant in a one-shoulder Michael Kors dress with cut-out at the hip.
Scarlet Ladies

Lea Michele wears a strapless Escada gown with asymmetrical sweetheart neckline. Isabel Lucas is in a unique coral pleated dress by Louis Vuitton. She accessorized with a gold headpiece, earrings and LV minaudiere bag. Gisele is radiant in an Alexander McQueen gown with voluminous skirt. Dianna Agron wore a simple red dress with triangular neckline by popular designer of the night, Michael Kors. Mary-Kate Olsen stays true to her offbeat style in a loosely fitting, long-sleeved vintage dress by Givenchy Couture.

The Quirky and Unusual

Blake Lively wore a sari draped Chanel Couture gown with silver embroidered bodice. Miranda Kerr is pretty in a swan inspired Marchesa tulle mini. Her look is completed by lacey Nicholas Kirkwood heels. Emma Stone went floral in a gray and black silk satin dress by Lanvin. Elle Fanning is whimsical in a black and white ensemble by Valentino. Liv Tyler wears a wing-quilted Givenchy Couture gown that's dipped in yellow. She carried a yellow Givenchy clutch.

Blush Tones

Mom-to-be Jessica Alba glows in a gold lamé dress by Ralph Lauren. Sarah Jessica Parker pays tribute to McQueen in an exquisite long sleeved beaded gown. Taylor Swift chose a black and nude organza gown with florid train by J.Mendel Couture. Gwyneth Paltrow kept it sleek in a shimmery nude gown by Stella McCartney. Salma Hayek wears a champagne chiffon Alexander McQueen dress with a rosette on the hip.
Different Takes on Black

Beyone wears an elaborate mermaid gown with gold embroidered bodice by Emilio Pucci. Jessica Szohr goes short in a fringed tinseled mini by Topshop Unique. Mia Wasikowska is a hit in this embellished black tea-length dress by Thakoon. Demi Moore takes flight in a fully feathered gown by Prabal Gurung. Her royal wedding inspired fascinator is by Philip Treacy. Michelle Williams is her quirky self in a Miu Miu silk gown adorned with gold birds.

Princess Dresses

Keri Hilson wears a gray knit Atelier Versace gown with tulle skirt. Michelle Alves looks stunning in a vintage lace dress by Abed Mahfouz. Model Jessica Stam is darling in a blush pink tulle gown by Tommy Hilfiger. Ashley Greene wears a strapless tulle gown with strings of sequins by Donna Karan. 17 year-old Dakota Fanning is age-appropriate in daisy-decorated ballgown by Valentino.

Most Disappointing

Rihanna in a black lace dilemma by Stella McCartney, the plaited hair just makes this look worse. Kristen Stewart in Proenza Schouler - the geometric print and red shiny fabric deters from any elegance. Ashley Olsen wears vintage Dior, the puffy Dynasty sleeves killed it for me. Emily Browning wears a Bordeaux lace dress with cap-sleeves and high-neck by Marc Jacobs This look ages her by years and the bag is appalling. Christina Hendricks in an organza gown by Carolina Herrera, looks like the last thing she grabbed while her house was on fire.

Shock Frocks

I almost have no words for these. Almost. Fergie takes her turn at playing a bride in this 80's style wedding gown by Marchesa. Christina Ricci in Zac Posen - this is more of a Halloween costume with all it's spider-webbing detail. Naomi Campbell is a fashion felon in shreds of white fabric by Alexander McQueen. Karolina Kurkova in an ill-fitting gown by Jean Paul Gaultier - so many things wrong, especially the white lace leggings. Daphne Guinness wears this gargantuan feathered 'structure' from the last Alexander McQueen Collection. I'm going to have endless nightmares about this one.

Blake Lively in Zuhair Murad

Blake Lively

dressed in Zuhair Murad Couture

Blake Lively stuns in this beautifully draped chiffon gown by Zuhair Murad. The actress was honoured at the Times 100 Most Influential People Gala this week (I'm guessing for her stylish fashion sense). The ombré aqua gown is from the designers' Hymne au desert Spring/Summer 2011 Collection. It was modified from the original runway look to include a beaded decolletage. Her turquoise and diamond statement ring is by Kimberly McDonald. Blake also showed off new shorter red locks - love the radiant colour on her. This is what I'd imagine Disney's real life 'Little Mermaid' to look like.

Off The Catwalk - Ashley Tisdale in Farah Angsana

Ashley Tisdale

dressed in Farah Angsana Couture

You have to believe me when I say I am not a fan of the High School Musical crew. However, I found myself drawn to this frilly frock that Ashley Tisdale wore to the premiere of her new movie. The white 'Talisa' dress is by Indonesian couture designer Farah Angsana. The bodice with embellished shoulder detail is Grecian-inspired, while the skirt has romantic tiered ruffles. Ashley paired the dress with a Swarovski clutch bag and glossy silver pumps by Brian Atwood. The runway model wears it with chunky gladiator heels. Being such a girly dress, I would have liked to see it with daintier heels.

Off The Catwalk - Jennifer Aniston in Valentino

Jennifer Aniston

dressed in Valentino Couture

Seeing this photo of Jennifer Aniston makes it hard to believe that the actress is 42 years old. She looks amazing in this nude asymmetrical dress from Valentino Spring 2011 Couture. She wore it to the launch of her new perfume in New Mexico. It's refreshing to see her with a shorter hairstyle and a bronze glow. She paired the embellished dress with nude Tabitha Simmons sandals. I think this dress looks better on Jennifer. Which do you prefer?

Off The Catwalk - Blake Lively in Chanel

Blake Lively

dressed in Chanel Couture

Gossip Girl's Blake Lively was the guest of honour at a Chanel dinner this week. She is a brand ambassador for their line of Mademoiselle handbags. She showed up to the event wearing a Chanel dress (obviously) from the label's Spring 2009 Couture Collection. This short-sleeved white dress features chiffon and organza ruffles on the skirt and neckline. It looks more structured on the runway. Blake paired it with Christian Louboutin shoes, a Mademoiselle handbag and emerald earrings. The shoes remind me of the kind that brides used to cover in satin to match their wedding gowns. Back in the 80's.
