Enchanting Varkala is like none other. It is beautiful at the same time interesting. For the tourists, the greatest lure of Varkala lies entirely in its sea shore. Varkala is located 54 km north west of Thiruvananthapuram, atop a 2 km long laterite cliff that looks down some of Kerala's' most picturesque beaches. Varkala Sightseeing :Papanasham Beach :Varkala also known as Papanasham beach is an important Hindu center of pilgrimage. A dip in its water is considered as extremely sacred. A natural spring, said to have medicinal properties originated from the cliff. What makes Papanasham truly remarkable is the long stretch of red laterite cliffs fringing the beach. One can also climb up the cliff to watch the panoramic view of the sunset. Tourists are requested to stay away from the beach on new moon days, when it becomes over crowed with the tourists.
Janardhana Swamy Temple : Another most important tourists attraction of the region is the the famous Janardhana Swamy Temple , located on the hill. According to the legends the temple is approximately 2,000 years old. It is dedicated Lord Vishnu – the creator of mankind. The present structure dates back to the 12th century and the temple is a vintage south India architecture. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter the inner sanctum of the temple. A perennial spring called Padmatheertham feeds the temple tank, which is located across the road. Pilgrims from all over the country come here to perform rites for the deceased.
Thiruvambady Beach :Tour to the Varkala beach won't be complete unless you don't check allure of Thiruvambady beach. It is perfect destination for those who are looking for that secluded spot where they could spend time in peace and silence. The unique feature of the beach is the black sand. It can be easily reached by climbing down the cliff.

A evening of Kathakali :Varkala Cultural Center, located 200 from temple junction along Beach road, holds daily Kathakali and Bharatanatyam dance performances from 6:30 to 8 pm. Tickets for the show costs around Rs 150. Although in the real performance, the make up process is much more elaborate and takes much long, it still provides tourists with an insight into the art.
Festivals in Varkala :Varkala is also a home to famous Arattu festival. Celebrated for the period of continuous ten days, it falls during Meenam (March-April) commencing with Kodiyettu (Flag hoisting) of Karthika day ending with Arattu on Uthram day. The major highlights of the festival are the elephant possessions followed by the traditional dances. It is one of the most important festival celebrated in Kerala.
