Blessed Samhain

I am not a fan of the commercial aspect of this time of year. The abomination that is modern Halloween and it's associated trappings just leaves me cold.

I will however say this to my friends

Efteling

Santos Futebol Clube terá cruzeiro do centenário no Mistral.

Happy Halloween!

The Candy King

There was a king who loved Halloween

He waited each year for this scary scene.

He sneaked out to hang on his door

Black bats and witches and spooks galore.

The midnight hour was his favorite time

With monsters covering snakes with slime.

As twelve o'clock chimed through the stars

He opened up his snickers bars.

The Cats and The Bats

The cats scare me and so do the bats

And both of them wear funny hats.

The bats hang upside down at night

They are a silly crazy sight.

The cats all like to hiss and fight.

They sit on the steps in the bright moonlight.

My favorite creature is a ghost

Because he's so spooky on a post.

Happy Halloween all my dear friends!:)

If We Had Halloween...

Happy Halloween to everyone celebrating in the rest of the world. Unfortunately, in South Africa, we don't celebrate the holiday, although, you do get the odd few people who up dress in the spirit of Halloween everyday. I always thought that Halloween must be the most fun holiday of them all. It's the only chance you get to dress in costume as your favourite fantasy character, without anyone alerting the local mental society - that would happen in my neighborhood if anyone saw me prancing around at night like a pirate on October 31st.

If we had Halloween this year, I'd find these costumes the most interesting:

*Angelica (Penelope Cruz) from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides'. The sword, albeit plastic, adds to the authenticity of this sassy, swashbuckling look. And it will help fend off any ghouls, ghosts, zombies or Captain Barbossa ;)
*Katy Perry's 80's nerd-to-disco-diva makeover look from her music video 'Last Friday Night'. Think of it this way, you get to wear not one, but two crazy outfits! On the other hand, people may make fun of you because they think you actually dress that way. Uh Oh.
*Anna Wintour - because every fashionista should go as her at least once in their lives. All you will need is a printed Prada/Balenciaga/YSL dress ($3000), dark shades ($250), a chic bob ($350), a pair of Manolo Blahniks ($735) and an austere presence (priceless).

One of the most popular costumes that people opt to wear on Halloween are those belonging to Disney Princesses. There are so many to choose from, but with one ballgown looking just like any other, how does one tell the difference?

*Ariel from 'The Little Mermaid' - Without the tail and an ocean beside her, this outfit could be confused for a belly dancer's...or much worse.

*Snow White - Walking around with an apple in your hand, you could be mistaken for an hors d'oeuvre waitress. On the upside, you could have your own entourage by hiring a few school kids to play the seven dwarfs.

*Tinkerbell - it could be assumed that you're dressed as a gigantic butterfly.

*Cinderella - it would be just another blue dress if not for those glass slippers - however the one shoe on, one shoe off will have you walking with a limp.

*Princess Aurora from 'Sleeping Beauty', there's no way to tell just from wearing a pink dress that this is an actual Disney princess. You will probably have to find a couch and fall off to sleep to make this look believable.

*Pocahontas - In SA, if you showed up at someone's door wearing a tattered dress and no shoes, you will be mistaken for a homeless person and sent chased away, maybe with some change if you're lucky.

*Princess Jasmine from 'Aladdin' - If you are planning on going the harem-pants and cropped top route, please read my post on 'What Not to Wear Ever' first.

*Belle from 'Beauty & the Beast'. The only way you could tell this colossal yellow dress belongs to Belle if you are accompanied by someone dressed as 'The Beast' (good luck finding a candidate) or if you carry the Mrs Potts & Chip tea set around with you. Expect to be asked for a 'spot of tea'.

I would probably chose either Snow White or Aurora. Would you wear any of these Disney-inspired looks? Whatever you chose to go as this Halloween, even a t-shirt and jeans + sombre looking Bella Swan, have a great one!

P.S No Disney characters were harmed during the publishing of this post.

Chilling, photo processing, Vampire Diaries

Following on from such an awesome night last night today was definitely a chilling day. We had planned to go to London for more giggage but were just feeling too tired to go.

I spent a lot of the day processing my photos from the night before for my blog and uploading videos while we watched the first 5 episodes of Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries. I have to say that it still remains a damn good show and probably just pips True Blood Season 4 for best vampire TV show honours.

Marching to the sea

Erik, aka "Lemonboy" built this tank. It is a good my own creation that does not dwarf minifigs and buildings. It is not nearly as cute as other tank that he has built, but we like it nonetheless.

Christina and Dan Have a Happy Wedding and Share Their Students’ Words About Why They Should Marry

Christina and Dan met four years ago when both were teaching at the same elementary school. Dan says they were “like magnetic forces that couldn’t be pulled apart” and as I have gotten to know them, I can see how this must have been true. They are still magnets for each other and love is truly at the core of their lives.

This fun-loving couple, who were so happy to be married they literally danced out the aisle at the end of the ceremony, had a great idea for something special to include in their wedding. They wanted to use the answers their students (3rd and 4th graders) gave to two writing assignments;

1. You should get married because...

2. You should marry Ms. Burton / Mr. Gross because...

Here, in the words and spelling of their students, are the astute and fun responses to the assignment. Out of the mouths of babes...

Dan started it this way;  Obviously the best part about our jobs is the children. Sometimes they have a way of looking at things that is so simple it makes everything clear and puts everything in perspective. We asked them to complete two statements about marriage, and despite their young age, their thoughts on love and marriage were surprising, heartwarming, caring, and sometimes just downright hilarious.

You should get married because….

… you will never be lonely and you will always have someone by your side.

…your life will be better and you will be happy.

…you love that person.

… you can live a happy life with the person you love.

… you make a good couple.

… you could live a happy life with your prince charming and you’ll have someone to yell at when you do something wrong.

…you will not be lonely and you don’t have to pay all the bills on your own.

…you are old, and you just need to.

…I DON’T KNOW!

Dan continued;  Sometimes kids can see things that adults would miss on a day to day basis. Here are the things that we love about each other in the words of our students.

You should marry Ms. Burton or Mr. Gross because… (read, alternating, by Dan and Christina

I should marry Ms. Burton because…she is funny, pretty, smart, amazing, awesome, cool and she is pretty good for me.

I should marry Mr. Gross because…he is nice, hansom, he loves mountain dew and Twinkies, he likes dogs, he wants kids, that’s all.

I should marry Ms. Burton because… she is very beautiful, smart, and she is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

I should marry Mr. Gross because… he is entertaining, and HOT!

I should marry Ms. Burton because… Why would I not!?, she is awesome, smart, funny and always happy.

I should marry Mr. Gross because… He can rock out on Guitar Hero!

I should marry Ms. Burton because… she is a wonderful person, she loves kids, she is down to earth and a heart warming person.

I should marry Mr. Gross because… He is FRICKIN AWESOME!

Christina’s closing words;  We hope that we can always see each other as clearly and lovingly as a child sees someone that they care about and that we can always find things that we adore about each other that others may not see.

This charming addition to their ceremony speaks volumes about the heart of this couple. Not only were they laughing as they read, but so were all their guests. It was great fun. All through the wedding, Christina and Dan were laughing and giggling and their guests were right there with them. Weddings should be happy celebrations and this one certainly was.

The ceremony and reception were held at the serenely beautiful Pine Lake Pavilion in Mebane. This is a wonderful wedding location for large or small weddings and I always enjoy being there. It is simply beautiful, with a a great, positive energy.

On hand to make sure this fun-loving couple and their guests had a great time and a great celebration was Jennifer Ball, the Events Manager of the Pavilion. Her fun energy was pitch-perfect for this happy group and she certainly added to the success of this event.

Also on hand was their DJ, Chris May, of Big Boy Productions. He was a lot of fun, too, very professional and, with a twinkle in his eye, you could tell he was going to be an asset for this event as well. Here he is with his tech assistant, whose name I did not get, unfortunately, but he was a great help for Chris to be sure.

The photographers were McDorman Photography. Comprised of the husband and wife team of Rob and Aimee McDorman, they were all over the place taking photos from every angle and not missing any of the special moments. I can’t wait to see their photos when they are online - they are sure to be spectacular!

Despite the sunshine, the day was very cold, but it had rained all the day before and into the wedding day morning, so none of us were complaining. Obviously Mother Nature was on board and contributing her part.

Christina and Dan, to paraphrase the reading your friend did from Dr. Seuss, “You’re off to great places, you’re off on your way. And will you succeed? Yes you will - 98 and ¾ percent guaranteed! Kids, you’ll move mountains, today is your day, your mountain is waiting so get on your way!”

Your students are mighty lucky to have teachers like you.

Update 10/30/11 - Just got an email from Christina and Dan with a link to a video of their first dance as husband and wife. They are one fun couple and their surprise first dance certainly reflects their personalities. Here is the link.  Enjoy!

Canon IXUS 1100 HS Handling

The IXUS 1100 HS is remarkably small considering it has a 12x optical zoom lens but has a fair bit of weight packed into the metal body. It looks really stylish which is largely due to the large 3.2 inch LCD screen which fills the majority of the back of the camera. There is room for one button on the back of the camera, the playback button, with the other buttons on the camera placed on the top. These include the power button, shutter, zoom rocker and a switch which places the camera in Smart Auto mode. The touch screen is bright, clear and responds really well when pressing the buttons. The menu system is simple and easy to navigate.

The battery has a CIPA rating of just 170 shots, if you are likely to be using the camera for a full day of shooting a spare is highly recommended. The camera is ready to take photos within 2 - 3 seconds of switching on with the camera quick to focus. When at 12x zoom, the lens is just 60mm long and is therefore very quick to move through its zoom range. In continuous shooting mode the camera managed full sized images at 2.25 fps, with 0.8 fps in continuous shooting AF mode and 6.5 fps in High-speed Burst mode, although file size is limited to 3 megapixels.
