WWE catch up & Dragon Age

Tonight was WWE catch up night.

Sam and I managed to finally got round to watching the WWE Elimination Chamber PPV which wasn't bad overall. We then watched the Undertaker and Triple H make their returns on RAW. All of this was accompanied by the delights of Domino's South Woodham Ferrers!

Sam then started a new campaign on Dragon Age: Origins which was surprisingly fun to watch. When I get a chance I shall have to have turn myself.

Tuesday Thrills - Studded Biker Jackets

The biker jacket has evolved from personal protective gear for motorcyclists to a fashion statement for women who may have never been on a bike. A leather jacket adds an edge to modern dresses and feminine clothes. This season, the studded range adds some extra adornment to your everyday cropped, roughed-up leather jacket.

Pictured left is a heavily silver-studded black leather biker from Burberry Prorsum. It has an asymmetrical zip, zip-up cuffs and pockets, with multi-sized studs on the collar, belt and sleeves. It is priced at £4 950,52

In the middle is a studded, cracked leather jacket by Just Cavalli. It's simpler and perhaps more wearable than the previous jacket. The shoulders and collar are edged with silver studs. The fit can be adjusted with buckled tabs at the back of the waist. It is priced at £1 917,15

To the right is a lighter cotton cropped jacket from Danish brand Day Birger Et Mikkelson. It still has that biker appeal without being too tough and can be worn  on cooler Autumn days. The jacket is available in a chalk beige colour and is embellished with gun-metal studs. It is priced at £597,89

Wear your biker over tees and jeans, body-con dresses or with floaty printed frocks for a pretty punk-rock look. All jackets are available online from net-a-porter.

The Oscar for best poster goes to…

Well after all the fuss and faff of the past ten days I can announce that the Low Yo-Yo Stuff poll has awarded the best poster design for the 2011 Oscars to… Black Swan!

Speech! Speech! Well Natalie Portman was other wise occupied but I can accept the accolade on her behalf and suffice to say I think this was down to the beautiful teaser campaign created by La Bocca. Well now you have seen the poster you can buy the mouse mat, hooded tops, coffee mug etc at the Black Swan shop.
Thanks to all of those who took the time to vote (all 4 of you!) and to all of you who enjoyed the posts. Normal service will now resume.

P&O Cruises Introduces New Loyalty Scheme

P&O Cruises is to introduce a new loyalty scheme, the P&O Cruises Peninsular Club, from April 2012 that will replace its current scheme, The Portunus Club. The new club will have six tiers and significant new benefits. The decision was taken to replace The Portunus Club having received feedback from passengers, says managing director Carol Marlow.

She explained: “Since its creation, The Portunus Club has seen both the numbers of members within the scheme, and the average number of points held per member, increase significantly. The review of the existing scheme and introduction of the P&O Cruises Peninsular Club has been shaped by our customers’ experiences and their comments, which demanded a more exclusive club, so we have kept the popular elements from The Portunus Club, and added new ideas, many of which came from our passengers.”

The previous scheme had three “tiers” - ruby, sapphire and gold categories - while the new Peninsular Club will have six distinct tiers, Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Caribbean, Baltic and Ligurian. The new club and tier names endorse the brand’s heritage and its world-wide footprint.

The Peninsular Steam Navigation Company was founded in 1837 from which P&O Cruises can trace its roots. The tier names come from oceans and seas of the world - all sailed countless times by P&O ships. These are arranged in order of size with the smallest in the club being Ligurian. This tier is reserved exclusively for P&O's most loyal and frequent cruisers.

The wide range of benefits of the club include an on board discount ranging from 5-0%, a complimentary celebratory drink as the ship sets sail, a pressing service and discounted laundry as well as early embarkation, an exclusive travel insurance offer, early booking offers and early cabin access.
During the next year, passengers will continue to earn 10 points for every night spent aboard any P&O ship and these will contribute towards their tier status in April 2012, when the total points will be transferred to the new Peninsular Club.

In the new scheme, the Baltic and Ligurian tiers will be exclusive to the most loyal passengers who have a total points value of more than 2,500. Entry to these tiers is not reliant only on points but also on a requirement for the passenger to have spent more than 80 nights on board any P&O ship within the three years prior to the start of their cruise.

Marlow added: “The top two tiers offer benefits only open to an exclusive group of our most loyal and regular passengers, and membership will only be granted on a cruise by cruise basis. This is a new loyalty club for a new era of cruising.”

Divas and Darlings - The Academy Awards

Red Carpet Fashion

The 83rd Academy Awards Show

The biggest names in showbiz strolled the red carpet last night at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. I was slightly disappointed from a fashion front, as no particular dress stood out to me as striking. There were some Highs however, as well as a few Lows.

Here is the Oscar Fashion Assembly.

Red Alert

Blending into the background, red was a popular choice. On the left, Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence wears a Baywatch-swimsuit-turned-gown by Calvin Klein. It's simple & streamlined and shows off her fantastic figure. Last year's Best Actress winner, Sandra Bullock chose a strapless Vera Wang gown with red clutch bag. Oscar host Anne Hathaway wore a strapless taffeta Valentino Couture gown decorated with unflattering fabric roses and train.

Colour on the Red Carpet

Amy Adams shimmered in a deep blue sequined dress by L'Wren Scott with cap-sleeves and high neck. She accessorized it with $1.35 million worth of Cartier emeralds and diamonds. Mila Kunis looked lovely in this romantic lavender chiffon and lace gown by Elie Saab. This year's Best Actress Winner, Natalie Portman played it safe in a plum off-the-shoulder dress by Rodarte. TV presenter Shaun Robinson wears a bold shade of blue in this one-shoulder dress with mermaid silhouette by Christiane King.

Nudes and Metallics

Another trend of the night was nude and metallic dresses. Michelle Williams wears a beaded Chanel column dress. It isn't spectacular, but a major step up from what she usually wears. Mandy Moore looks stunning in a nude off-the-shoulder gown with sequined bodice by Monique Lhuillier. Gwyneth Paltrow wears a slinky silver dress by Calvin Klein. Singer Florence Welch sticks to her vintage and whimsical sense of style in this long-sleeved chiffon and Chantilly lace tiered dress by Valentino.

Dramatic Silhouettes

Hilary Swank is covered in glitter and ostrich feathers (which I prefer to see on the bird itself). Her silver sequin dress with ombre feather skirt is by Gucci. Camila Alves looks gorgeous in a black Kaufman Franco ballgown with plunging neckline and full skirt. Halle Berry steals the limelight in this ethereal beaded dress by Marchesa with silk tulle ruffle train.

Wanted : A New Stylist

From the front, Cate Blanchett's lilac pleated Givenchy Couture gown is quite interesting and pretty. I changed my mind once I saw the back, which is harshly contrasted by the armoured sleeves and a curious yolk-yellow coral design. Scarlett Johansson may be a classic beauty, but this burgundy lace tea-cosy gown by Dolce & Gabbana is just awful. Nicole Kidman in Christian Dior Couture - maybe if they omitted the strangely shaped hip-enlarging panels, it would have been a lot better. Penelope Cruz wears a glitzy wine-red L'Wren Scott gown. It's really not a bad dress, but you could get one exactly like it from any Asian Bazaar in Joburg - 10 years ago.

Who was your best and worst dressed at this year's Academy Awards?

Steller Zeearend

Winter's Bone

Winter's Bone. Directed by Debra Granik.

Synopsis:
An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.

Design: Five33

OK the last one up is Winter's Bone I don't know much about this film as it's only getting it's release here in France at the moment. The poster on first look doesn't really tell me much, a photoshopped collage of elements, tell me it has a female lead, takes place in the wild and looks like it's not going to be Toy Story 3! The typeface looks like Helvetica with a stenciled effect treatment to the film's title giving it a cold icy look, this is echoed in the over all colour palette making it feel cold.

The general layout differs from the standard  'everything centered' approach of the majority of posters we have seen. The right ranged text balances with the girl's image, the negative space created by the trees creates a perfect place to place the text while the tree line leads the eye to the movies title. All in all a well constructed poster, if a little cliched in it's content.

It's only when you look at other posters in the series that you notice a distinct lack of consistency, certain elements are the same such as the girl and the trees but typographically, structurally and colour wise each have their own take. I don't think that one studio was responsible for all of these, if they were then their consistency checker was  at lunch the day these went out the door.

The title typefaces range from Kabel to Helvetica Neue and while trawling the net I came across a hand written version for the French release. With the placement, the film title sits at the top, middle or the bottom depending on which images are used. Even if this was down to regional taste and preferences, the same title font could have been used, all in all it feels a bit disjointed.

VERY lazy day and being a bloke

Didn't get up until 13:30 today. RESULT!

Did very little. Went out for breakfast (well lunch) and then came home and became a bloke for 2 hours and watched the Arsenal v Birmingham fiasco that was the Carling Cup. I don't know why I felt the need to watch it, must have been one of those rare testosterone moments.

The evening was spent watching The Empire Strikes Back and eating stir fry, a great way to finish things off.

Party in Small Town, SA

7 days, 70 guests, 2 birthdays, 1 party. This weekend proved that it is possible to plan a party in just one week. In Small Town, SA, we have no event planners or decor hire, nowhere to buy party clothes or birthday gifts and no available venues. When two of my close friends decided to throw a combined 21st/18th birthday party, no one thought it could be done within the time limit. We couldn't find a venue that was not falling apart, booked out or overpriced in such a short time. After much searching, pleading and negotiating, we managed to book a venue that included a roof, tables and some chairs. Everything else had to be done ourselves.

In a whirlwind of a week, we organized everything from invitations, decor, music, menu, food, drinks and all the little trimmings that take an event from drab to fab. There were many nerve-racking are-we-going-to-get-this-done-on-time moments but, with the help of friends and family, all the party plans finally fell into place. We transformed the dreary venue with dazzling decor in black and red. Buffet tables were deliciously lined with braai favourites, delightful drinks, mouth-watering desserts, cookies and cakes. After far too much good food, the band of bewildered DJ's set up their decks (aka a Hi-Fi and computer) and tried to get the crowd to liven up a bit. This was actually more of a mission than planning the entire party, as no one likes to stand out in a crowd. Luckily, the Birthday Girls stepped in and set a spark to the dancefloor, and others slowly started to ease up and join in. The rest just turned their seats towards us, hoping to catch some free entertainment in the modern-day Small Town version of Saturday Night Fever. As they say, if you can't beat them, join them. If you can't join them, pull up a chair and stare.

Party Round-Up:

Theme song of the night: Only Girl In The World by Rihanna

Best dressed: The Birthday Girls of course!

Most delicious: Creamy coffee marble cheesecake

Most surprising: Seeing people you'd never expect busting their moves on the floor.

Most awkward moment: A bar-style brawl breaking out over some mindless miscommunication and attention seeking.

Most annoying: The unpaid paparazzi capturing our every move on film.

Worst decision: Wearing high heels. Our feet were aching after just 10 minutes in.

Best decision: Kicking off the high heels and walking barefoot.

Worst revelation: Realizing that walking barefoot was not such a good idea, as the carpet was covered in all sorts of unidentifiable gross and sticky things. My galpal Ms Mocha advised us to wash our feet with Dettol & Domestos when we got home, to prevent any infection.

Best line of the night: Don't talk to me, talk to my Blackberry.

I am happy to report that the party was a huge success. The night was lit up with some much needed excitement, fun & laughter with the presence of great company. I would like to say that we partied until the sun came up...but we only had the venue until midnight. A minute after that, and any Small Town Cinderella may turn into a pumpkin ;) Oh yeah, and the security guard would've had to chase us out.

True Grit

True Grit. Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

Synopsis:
A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father's murderer.

Design: BLT Associates
Yep, them again!

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE! This is what this poster is all about. It roots its self firmly in the venacular of the Wild West and in all the film incarnations that we have seen before that live in the popular imagination. I see tumble weed, smell spur whiskey, hear creaky saloon doors swinging and in the distance see dusty riders approaching when I look at this poster and all through the simple power of a font. The font used here is Rockwell, created around 1910 so it wasn't even around when the West was wild, so why use it. The western has been a long running story, and with that a lot of cliches and misnomers and the designers by simply avoiding all the wood type and associated 'cowboy' fonts have side stepped a whole 'Rawhide' take on cowboy movies and created something that hints at a 'fresh' look at the subject.

The original poster for the John Wayne version of the film again not an Egyptian slab in sight

The text is beautifully crafted, clear and shows that good typography is enough to grab the attention of the audience. The structure that is created by the text is carried through beautifully on the character posters, none of the feel of the original is lost.

This is an excellent series and one that strikes a good midpoint between what a modern big studio production demands while retaining the character of the film and and giving it some integrity to boot all through well thought out and sympathetic design.

While researching this poster I also came across the work of Aaron Horkey who created his this version of the true Grit poster as a limited edition for Mondo. All the lettering and illustration are hand drawn, with no computer aid and then screen printed.

Toy Story 3

Toy Story 3. Directed by Lee Unkrich.

Synopsis:
The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it's up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren't abandoned and to return home.

Design: BLT Associates
Yes for the second time!

Pixar movies are event movies, just like the old style Disney movies used to be. Your parents would take you to the cinemas as a Christmas treat to see the latest animated adventures and as soon as you have just finished watching one you find your self hankering for the next one, (well at least I do!). It is for this reason the the posters promoting their films don't have work too hard. With the Toy Story franchise there has already been two previous movie which have set up the style, that and the fact that every child under 12 has been indoctrinated into the cult of Buzz and Woody at sometime either through, toys, pyjamas, schoolbags t-shirts or any of the other endless merchandising avenues, I know I have a Buzz and Woody tucked away and I'm way over 12!

The brand is so recognisable now that simply using the number 3 in conjunction with the word 'toy' is enough to let you know what's coming. The typeface used for the Toy Story logo is Gill Sans Std-Ultra Bold and is probably uniquely associated with this film now. As this is an event movie there are lot's of varations, teasers, character posters, release posters, post release posters, you name it they have it, it would be pretty impossible for me to place them all here so here are a few of the character ones and one of the whole gang old and new together for one last time. One thing I will say and that is that I love what  Pixar do. The thought, care and attention that they put into all their productions, from the tiniest detail of how a character moves to pleasure they take in the craft of storytelling is evident in every frame and it wouldn't really matter to me what their posters show I'm always looking forward to the next one.

Let's rap!

As I promised to some of you, I will post here some rap songs to learn how to rap. Hope you like it!

1.- A very serious rapper and a funny one. (un rapero muy serio con otro divertido) Tinchy Stryder feat. N-Dubz They are all British.

2.- One that sings with a famous girl. B.O.B. feat Haley Williams (he is American).

3.- The most famous one: Eminem (He is obviously American).

4.- One of my favourites: Tinie Tempah (he is British, and this is not his best song, but it is the one that made him famous - no es su mejor canción, pero es la que le ha hecho famoso).

Oreo Cookies

On March 6th 1912 the first Oreo Cookies were sold. They are almost 100 years!!!

Did you think Oreo Cookies were that old? (¿pensabas que las galletas Oreo serían tan antiguas?)
Do you like Oreo Cookies?
What are your favourite cookies-biscuits?
What is your favourite thing to eat when it's not the breakfast-lunch-dinner? (¿qué es lo que más te gusta comer entre horas?)

If you don't understand anything, just ask!!

Selena Gomez: A year wihout rain

Some of you asked for this song: Selena Gomez - A year without rain. I think it is a nice and not very difficult song.

If you had to be a year without something, what would it be? (si tuvieses que estar un año sin algo, qué sería?).

Can you feel me
When I think about you?
With every breath I take
Every Minute
No matter what I do
My world is an empty place

Like I’ve been wondering the dessert,
for a thousand days
Don't know if it's a mirage,
but I always see your face, baby...

I'm missing you so much
Can't help but I'm in love

A day without you is like a year without rain.
I need you by my side,
Don't know how I'll survive
A day without you is like a year without rain.

The stars are burning,
I hear your voice in my mind (in my mind)
Can't you hear me calling?
My heart is yearning,
Like the ocean that's running dry
Catch me I'm falling

It's like the ground is crumbling underneath my feet,
Won't you save me?
It’s gonna be a moonsoon
When you get back to me

I'm missing you so much
Can't help but it I'm in love
A day without you is like a year without rain.
I need you by my side,
Don't know I'll survive
A day without you is like a year without rain.

So let this drought come to an end
And make this dessert flower again
I'm so glad you found me, stick around me,
Baby, baby, baby…

It's a world of wonder,
with you in my life
Still hurting baby
Don’t waste no more time
I Need you here,
I can't explain
But a day without you
Is like a year without rain

I'm missing you so much
Can't help but it I'm in love
A day without you is like a year without rain.
I need you by my side,
Don't know how I'll survie
But a day without you is like a year without rain

Ohh...
