Patterns, dear readers! eilonwy77 presents us with more of her interesting, intricate patterns. Of those that she recently posted, this one struck your blagger as the most interesting, particularly because of its illusion of depth in more than one direction. While she claims that this is only an experiment, we think this is a metaphor in that the world is not always as it seems and can be seen from more than one direction or perspective, or so. What do you think, readers?

Stratford upon Avon day 1

We got up really early today and headed off to Stratford upon Avon to see my mum. It was a really good run and we got there earlier than expected which made a pleasant change. Mum and Sam were out though so we ended up sitting in the car for 15 minutes while we waited for them to get back. This was just enough time for Gemima to almost drive us insane LOL

When we got in we had a buffet style lunch and then had a round of Yahtzee. We then took a gentle stroll into town so I could get some Euros for our Wacken trip. Mum, Toni and Gemima then went off for a cup of tea while Sam and I disappeared to Games Workshop to investigate the new Warhammer Fantasy rulebook. Half an hour of geek talk later we met up with the others clutching our newly bought rulebook, measuring set and magic cards. I had great fun winding Sam up telling him he couldn't read it *grin*

After another cup of tea we went back to mums and relaxed for a bit before the subject of dinner came up. It was decided that we would go to a buffet restaurant called Jimmy Spices which offered a good selection of Indian, Chinese, Thai and Italian dishes. It wad delicious and we rolled back home having eaten way too much. As we were all stuffed it was decided that we would all go to bed as tomorrow we'll be driving back to SWF and then preparing for out trip to Wacken in Germany.

The night sky whispers an adjustment to the clouds above them.

"...bleak, wind-swept fens and moors; empty fields with broken walls and gates hanging off their hinges; a black, ruined church; an open grave; a suicide buried at a lonely crossroads; a fire of bones blazing in the twilit snow; a gallows with a man swinging from its arm; another man crucified upon a wheel; an ancient spear plunged into the mud with a strange talisman, like a little leather finger, hanging from it; a scarecrow whose black rags blew about so violently in the wind that he seemed about to leap into the grey air and fly toward you on vast black wings..."

This ghastly apparition reaches out directly into the nightmare hearts of all who pass by. How very melancholy!

In other news: quick everyone dig out their Hagar's Hut roofs! What's in the hatch?!

Automotive X Prize Finalists (PHOTOS): 9 Cars That Could Change The World

They're aerodynamic, they're snappy, and, best of all, they're efficient.

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize has announced the finalists in its competition to develop a new breed of energy efficient vehicles.

Just 9 cars (down from 136) remain in the competition, which aims to "inspire a new generation of super fuel efficient vehicles." The cars, which go through a grueling series of tests and technical inspections to determine their road-worthiness, must be able to handle real-world scenarios. "It is about developing real, production-capable cars that consumers will want to buy, not science projects or concept cars," the X Prize Foundation explains.

Check out the finalists in the slideshow below, then vote for your favorite on the X Prize website.

The two-seater vehicle, designed by X-Tracer, has a slick aerodynamic design. The car weighs about 1350 pounds, runs on an electric battery, and should cost around $100,000.

Stats:

Antarctic Camping and Hiking

By guest blogger Steve Newman

The sight of the mouth of a humpback whale no more than ten feet away from your Zodiac really epitomises what adventure cruising is all about. As this picture proves, it may not happen that often but, when it does, you're not going to forget it in a hurry.

Zodaics of course are an essential part of this genre and One Ocean Expeditions use them to their full extent. With expedition cruises to both the polar regions, you even have the chance to camp overnight on the Antarctic continent! This night ashore under the midnight sun has proved very popular with the lullaby of ice groaning, whales snorting and the waves gentle lapping on the pebbled shore wafting you gently off to sleep.

Sea Kayaking, whale watching and even hiking are also on offer here. Hiking in Antarctica? Well, yes, why not? Designed for the more active traveller, the trips last for about three hours and cover quite difficult terrain.

As far as the Arctic goes, the star looks to be the 12-day High Arctic and Greenland explorer visiting the amazing seabird colonies at Prince Leopold Island and watching out for Arctic foxes, polar bears and that unicorn of the seas, the narwhal. The human side of this ecosystem is viewed, too, with a visit to the Innuit at Nunavat, a people who still cling to their ancient ways of symbiosis and respect for the land.

One excellent idea is the on-board photographer and multi-media studio where you can download your images to hard drives and be shown how to tweak and improve them using photographic manipulation software. Why don't all cruise companies do that?

Either way I'm sold - it's just a question of which one to do first.

Next Prius to be Built in the United States;

The hybrid vehicle market is going to be worth checking out for many buyers in the next few years. There are several new hybrid vehicle models such as the new Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid that will be available at a discount during VW Specials along with other Volkswagen models. Even other types of vehicles have been positively affected by the advent of hybrids due to the fact that hybrids have put more pressure on these vehicles to be fuel efficient. The Ford F-150 is certainly no hybrid vehicle, but even models like this are being made with better fuel efficiency in order to keep up in competition with the efficiency of hybrids and other well designed large vehicles.

It is unclear whether brands like Mazda and Honda who sells vehicles at San Jose Mazda Dealers and Hyundai will be adding more hybrid vehicles to their lineup, however several automakers like Toyota, Ford, Nissan, and GM have made it clear that they will be competing in this market.

News has come out that Toyota will be building its fourth-generation Prius in the United States but not for a long time. The fourth-generation Prius will not be built until 2016 because of factory delays and other preparations. The closing of the NUMMI plant by GM caused the Prius to be delayed.

Also, Toyota expected the United States economy to take some time to rebound. It is surprising that Toyota will wait a whole six years to build their new Prius model. One has to wonder whether this is a sign that the economy might be in for the long haul in terms of a recovery.

Other automakers like Tesla have decided to ramp up or release their own models in 2012 instead of 2016. It is estimated that the hybrid auto market will increase every year, however Toyota knows better than anyone what the hybrid auto market is like since the company has by far the most experience with producing and selling hybrid vehicles.

Long day, holiday, Holy Grail

Today was a looong day! Got in early as usual and set about starting to clear out all outstanding tasks so that Stuart isn't left with any additional crap when I am on holiday next week. The day seemed to conspire against me as more stuff kept appearing just as I thought everything was almost finished. Things were compounded by having to operate tasks across two networks and a painfully slow connection between them.

I did finally get out of there an hour later than planned but at least I got everything done that I needed to. Still not 100% sure about how things will pan out at WSS as everything seems to switch between good business as usual and frustrating corporate bullocks with alarming regularity.

On the plus side, it's time to switch to holiday mode as I'm now off for a good break before having to return on the 10th August. You never know we might only have to use one network by the time I return!

Anyhoo, that's enough work talk, it's holiday time. This weekend we are off to Stratford upon Avon to see my mum and pick up Sam and then next week Toni, Sam and I are off to Wacken in Germany with SPiT LiKE THiS for the Wacken Open Air festival. Awesome times ahead!

Before the madness begins we watched Monty Python & The Holy Grail before hitting the hay early.

Nissan selling rechargeable Leaf hatchbacks to Enterprise for rental fleet

Nissan Motor Co. will deliver rechargeable Leaf hatchbacks to rental-car company Enterprise Holdings Inc. to be used in its US operations.

Enterprise, which runs Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo and National car rental lots and the WeCar car-sharing service, is purchasing 500 lithium-ion-powered Leafs, according to Nissan spokeswoman Katherine Zachary. Delivery of these vehicles will begin in January.

Nissan, currently Japan’s third-largest automaker, desires to sell a minimum of 20,000 units of the Leaf in the US during the model’s first year. The Leaf, which will be pioneered in the US later this year, is priced at $32,780.

Nissan aims to become the major producer of electric vehicles. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said that it has set a target of expanding global Leaf production to up to 500,000 vehicles by the end of 2012.

The sales agreement between Nissan and Enterprise for electric vehicles is in fact the second such arrangement for Nissan. Last February, Nissan had declared that it will sell Leafs to Hertz Global Holdings for use in rental fleets in the US and Europe.

Acidentes com o MSC Splendida e Emerald Princess.

MSC Splendida

More from Aqua Expeditions

Adventure cruising has become very much our theme recently (and certainly this week, thanks to the sterling efforts of guest blogger Steve Newman!), hence the latest news from deluxe Peruvian specialist Aqua Expeditions really strikes a chord with us.

Following on from the success of their first Amazon river-cruise vessel, the MV Aqua, the company will launch an even more luxurious and quality-conscious vessel in 2011, the MV Aria.

Again concentrating on the upper reaches of the river from Iquitos in Peru, the newcomer will help to chart more lesser-known stretches of the mighty Amazon, providing a genuinely fascinating and ultra-personal look at this part of the world, but in great style. Aqua Expeditions were featured in the glossy new Adventure Cruise Collection of the Cruise Line Ltd (the UK's leading luxury adventure cruise specialist) earlier this year, and it seems that is already having an impact on future bookings.

The Aria will feature 16 specially-designed cabins with floor-to-ceiling picture windows (there are just 12 on Aqua, hence this is a slight enlargement), a fully air-conditioned top deck with Observation Lounge as well as Aqua's signature Amazon Grill, with award-winning Executive Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, affectionately known as 'the Jungle Chef' in Peru.

In addition to these amenities, Aria will also boast an exercise room and an outdoor Jacuzzi with Sun Deck, a unique addition to accommodate the discerning and fitness conscious traveller.

"We are thrilled to announce the launch of the world's second five-star luxury vessel to sail the Amazon," says founder and CEO Francesco Galli-Zugaro. "The MV Aria will provide the ever-growing number of travellers who wish to explore one of the world's last great wilderness areas with a one-of-a-kind travel experience."

Count us in, say I.

(Now, how do we work our schedule to ensure we can get on board next year!)

PS: You can also look up more about the new ship on their own blog on this link: Aqua Blog

Spectacular Anchorage

By guest blogger Steve Newman

Well, the Gold Rush may be long over, but there is another stampede starting to happen as more and more dedicated cruisers discover the natural wonders of Alaska.

Imagine standing on your private veranda watching humpbacked whales breaching, eagles soaring above you and then being one of the privileged few on Earth to spend a whole day in Glacier Bay National Park.

All of these - and much more - are now available from Holland America's 2011 Alaska cruise programme. The company have been cruising to Alaska longer than anyone else and also take tours into Canada's Yukon territory.

But it's the way that these comfortable mid-size ships seem dwarfed by snow-capped mountains that literally sit on the shoreline that stays longest in your memory here.

There are a wide range of cruises on offer in this marvellous area of the world, where names like Seattle, Anchorage, British Columbia and Vancouver are all steeped in Northwest history, to become vivid memories along with many of the smaller coastal places such as Kodiak, Skagway and Homer, still clinging to their pioneer heritage.

The scenery on this tour is simply breathtaking, from the stunning glaciers to the sheer beauty of sailing through the Inside Passage - a collection of islands and channels running along the coast (see above).

And, if you want to do your bit for the environment, Holland America have an excellent online check-in system as well to cut out on all that unnecessary paper.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Meets with Colbert;

The CEO of Tesla Motors met with Steven Colbert to discuss some of the latest Tesla projects and other projects that Musk is involved in. Tesla is an electric vehicle production company that is a major up and coming automaker. Peoria Volkswagen will sell the Jetta Hybrid model that Volkswagen will release in 2011, however Tesla has a head start on much of the competition with its Roadster electric model. The Ford Escape Hybrid is also one of the top hybrid models and can be found at many Ford dealers.

Reading Dodge Dealers also sell fuel efficient Dodge models like the Dodge Ram Hybrid, but none so far compare to the Tesla Roadster in terms of its electric engine efficiency. A major purpose of Tesla is to offer affordable electric vehicles to the public at some point. Elon Musk noted that Tesla only offers a pricey electric vehicle that is in limited production at the moment: the Tesla Roadster. The Roadster can be purchased for $109,000 at select dealerships throughout the country.

However, Elon Musk said that the Model S sedan would be available soon for about half the price of the Roadster. He then went on to say that the ultimate goal is to reduce the price of Tesla's electric models by even more to $30,000. The lower the price of the model, the more accessible it is for American consumers, and price is always a very important factor to consider for a vehicle. The Model S sedan will be available on a wide scale beginning in 2010.

Elon Musk is a very interesting CEO who is reported to be extravagant with some of his spending. He is also involved in a space travel project that may be involved in future space transportation. Musk is the former founder of Paypal which he sold several years ago to eBay for a large sum of money. Elon Musk is supposedly the inspiration for the Tony Stark character in the latest Iron Man films. Musk has invested much of his fortune into his ventures like Tesla Motors, but the investment has already paid off with a successful IPO and what looks to be large success on the horizon with the Model S sedan.

Chilling, band stuff, Wolverine and song

After a hectic day at work it was time to kick back a bit. I was the first one home so just took some time to have a coffee and relax.

No rest for the wicked though as I had a load of band stuff to catch up on, photos to upload etc.

We watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine whilst enjoying a cracking meal.

The day was rounded off with a last minute email containing the first of our recorded tracks in a very roughly mixed form. Although the mix needs work I am really pleases with the way it is sounding and how good Hollywood Doll actually sound when committed to recorded media. Can't wait to hear the final mix and all the other tracks. They'll be coming soon folks!

Modern system to crash test vehicles

WASHINGTON (AP) - The government says it plans to test 55 vehicles from the 2011 model year under a new safety ratings system that comprises tougher requirements.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the tests will be accomplished under a new five-star ratings system that includes new tests.

The revamped system will give consumers a single overall score for the initial time.

Some of the best-selling cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles in the U.S. will be tested, as well as the Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu, Ford F-150 and Honda Odyssey.

The consumer program was started in 1979. Some safety advocates have said most vehicles make four or five stars on the tests, making it complicated for consumers to compare safety features.

Toyota to Celebrate a Decade of Prius Models;

2010 is the ten year anniversary of the Toyota Prius model in the United States. Volkswagen is also looking to release a hybrid model or two of the next few years that will be sold at Volkswagen AZ dealers among other dealers. Over the past ten years, the hybrid model has greatly improved in its design and it currently is the top selling hybrid model in the United States and the rest of the world. Also, GM's Chevy Volt model will be coming out soon and parts for the Volt among other Chevy models can be purchased from Florida Chevrolet Parts dealers.

Ford has recently released its own Ford Fusion Hybrid that is a direct competitor to the Prius and can be found at many New York Ford Dealers. Toyota was far ahead of the pack ten years ago when it released the first Prius hybrid, but the first generation model was not nearly as fuel efficient as the current model. Toyota has had 10 years to alter and improve the design and efficiency of the Prius hybrid while newer automakers will have to learn from trial and error as they release their own first hybrid models.

Toyota also recently announced that they would be releasing a RAV4 hybrid model that is based on the popular RAV4 SUV. The model would be designed in conjunction with the United States automaker Tesla and it is one of the most highly anticipated hybrid vehicle models to ever hit the market. The RAV4 was selected because its chassis and size is more suitable for the large battery that Tesla will provide for it.

Toyota is currently a major leader in hybrid vehicle production and the company will continue to improve on the Prius's engineering and features. Toyota is working on a new line of Prius models that feature full lithium ion batteries and will be released in 2012 in the United States.

Galapagos Hopper

By guest blogger Steve Newman

If you are thinking of going island hopping, I guess the Galapagos are are pretty good place to do it. Far too much has been written about these amazing islands to repeat it here but what is not so well known is that certain islands are barred from being visited by the larger cruise ships.

This is where vessels such as International Expeditions' Evolution (above right) come in to play. The 32-guest ship is one of the few vessels allowed to visit Genovesa Island on her ten-day Galapagos tour. Visiting this island is like popping into a private nature reserve as it has more bird species than any other in the the archipelago.

The point is that on this cruise you'll find yourself just inches away from giant tortoises, penguins, iguanas and many other wild animals. You can even kayak, snorkel and swim with sea lions or take a panga ride to search for endangered turtles and white-tipped reef sharks.

The company's policy of having small numbers on its cruises is rewarded with your onboard naturalists and experts being able to import so much more information to you.

Their Amazon river journey, for example, only has 28 guests and the Papua New Guinea cruise is restricted to 16, and even then you break into smaller groups for a deeper exploration of the rain forests.

International Expeditions also has a strong tradition of conservation, bringing help to both the environments and local eco-systems they visit, as well as the people who live there. There are also extensions to these cruises and, if you want to go even further afield, Antarctica and East Greenland are amongst the other destinations on offer.
