The History of Visakhapatnam :

Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, is named after the god of 'Valor-Vishakha', the second son of Lord Shiva. The history of Visakhapatnam can be traced back to the 6th century BC. It was once the part of the consecutive Kalinga Kingdom under the Ashoka's rule. Apart from that the successive dynasties from Pallava, Chola and Ganga, have contributed significantly to the state's rich cultural tapestry and have left behind a great architectural legacy in the form of edifices, monuments and architectural ruins that can be seen today.

During the 15th century, it became the part of the great Vijayanagar Empire. As Visakhapatnam is located on the shores of Bay of Bengal, it was also the important trading center. Earlier the traders from Europe, Dutch and Portuguese used it as the trading center to export ivory, textiles, tobacco, indigo etc.
Since India gained independence, Visakhapatnam has become the major port handling huge volumes of cargo everyday.

Kailasagiri :
It is no doubt, that Kailasagiri is one of the most significant destination of Visakhapatnam. Adorned with the picturesque hillock and beautiful beaches, it offers a fascinating view of the sea. The most dominant feature of the Kailasagiri hill station is the massive sculpture of celestial couple – Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Rushikonda Beach : The lovely Rushikonda beach, 8 kms from Visakhapatnam, is the ideal location to engage in the exciting water activities with the vast golden sands and gushing waves of the Bay of Bengal. It is also a popular picnic destination among the locals of the city.

Ramakrishna Beach : Commonly known as the RK beach, it is one of the most happening beach, located on the east coast in Visakhapatnam. Swimming, skiing, wind surfing and sun bathing are some of the activities in which you can indulge here.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park : Spread to the total area of 625 acres, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is one of the largest zoo in the country. There are about eight species of animals that can be found in the zoo. Some of the important attractions of the zoo are Deer Safari, Nocturnal animals, Toy train, Shanty Sarovar view, Zoo van drive and Bay of Bengal view points.

Anantagiri Hills :
Anantagiri is located at the highest altitude place in Andhra Pradesh.
It is considered to be a perfect head off to get away from the blistering summer months. It falls on the way to Araku Valley and is famous for coffee plantations, exotic waterfalls and its pleasant climate.

Simhachalam : Simhachalam lies at the distance of about 16-km from Vishakhapatnam and is most for the temple of Sri Varaha Lakshminarasimha. It is a must visit on the tour to Visakhapatnam.

Araku Valley : Araku, one of the most picturesque valley is famous for its luxurious gardens, scenic waterfalls and gushing streams. Bheemunipatnam : Bheemunipatnam or Bheemili lies at the distance of about 25-km from Visakhapatnam is Bheemunipatnam. It is a popular beach location, located at the mouth of the river Gosthani.

'Visakha Utsav' is the grandest annual tourism festival of Visakhapatnam. It is a four day event, which is organized by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development to promote tourism in the state.
