Kharapathar – Thanedar circuit in Uttarakhand is an unexplored Paradise

I discovered the charms of Kharapathar Tani Jubbar Lake and Thanedar quite by chance last year. And since than it became my favorite holiday destination in India. Fed up with the Jaipur's hot climate, a friend and I had driven from Jaipur to the Himalayas in Uttarakhand.

On the Road :

We took a turn from Delhi Grand Trunk Road to Chandigarh at Pipli, past Yamunanagar and finally reached Paonta Sahib. We than decided to spend a night at Chakrata and entered Himachal Pradesh, driving past the village of Hatkoti. But due to the eavy fog we took the wrong road and reached Kharapathar by accident. We were actually on our way to Rohru on the road to Narkanda. On the chilly night the drive across 1,800 kms seemed rater senseless.

But all mt frustration went to vein when next morning I threw open the curtains of my room at the Giriganga resort in Kharapathar. The landscape was white and the view mind boggling. All around was heavy snowfall. We gingerly drove onto the Theong, since the road to Rohru was now iced out. Luckily we has snow chains for the real tricky iced out sections.

Snowed Out !

From there we decided to head to Narkanda on NH22 – the main Shimla Rampur road – as Chandigarh and Kufri were snowed out. We walked six kilometers to the Tani Jubbar Lake. The snowfall had stopped and the sky was clear. The lake and the adjoining Nag Devta temple looked like the small miniature paintings. Standing there on the snow covered ground i thanked for that wrong turn and snow logged roads that forced me to come here.

And the beauty that surrounded me made the long drive worth too.
