Around Kollam

Kollam is an excellent tourists destination in Kerala, visited by tourists from all over the world. There are lot of sightseeing destination around Kollam that includes :

Thirumullavaram Beach :

Located at the distance of 6 km from Kollam, Thirumullavaram is popular picnic destination. If you are looking for the that one spot where you spend time in complete seclusion, than Thirumullavaram is perfect choice for you. The main highlight of the beach is Nyarazhacha Paara, which lies ½ km into the sea and can be seen from shore at low tide. Tourists can make a excursion trip to the nearby Mahavishnu temple, that is believed to have been consecrated by Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu and legendary creator of Kerala.

Mayyanad :

Mayyanad is a beautiful town located at the distance of 10 kms from Kollam. The area is renowned for its shrines and temples. The most important temple here is Subramanya temple at Umayanallor. The shrine is said to have been consecrated by the Sree Sankaracharya - great Hindu philosopher.

Neendakara :

Neendakara was developed as the fishing harbor under an Indo – Norwegian project. It is located 8 km from Kollam on the route to Alleppey. Now a days it is most famous for a post monsoon phenomenon called 'Chaakara', which occurs just off the Neendakara coast. After that, mud banks are formed under the sea, creating a lagoon teeming million of fish, pawns, sardines and shrimps. From the bridge you can see the Chinese fishing nets silhouetted against the sky.

Ochira :

Also known as Dakshina Kashi, Ochira lies 34 km north of Kollam town. The unique feature of the temple is that, it does not have any organized structure or layout. Than for the matter of surprise there is no deity or idol in the temple. The whole concept of worship in the temple revolves round Parabrahman or the universal consciousness. The unique temple of Ochira has a universal appeal and it attracts tourists from all over the world. The temple is the venue of two important festivals including- Ochira Kali and Panthrandu Vilakku.

Sasthamkotta :

Sasthamkotta, 29 km from Kollam is a stunning lake surrounded by three hills from all sides The ancient Sastha temple , an important pilgrimage center is also located here.

Karunagapalli :

Karunagapalli, 23 km north of Kollam is the region where 'kettuvallam' traditional boats are being made. These long cargo, a familiar sight on the backwaters are built entirely without the use of nails. Each jack wood plank is sewn to the next with coir rope and than the whole is coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels.
