Dharamshala is a small hilly town located in the lap of Himalayas, in the beautiful state of Himachal Pradesh. Dharamshala is also famous by the name of 'Little Lhasa' all over the world as headquarters of Tibetan Government in exile is also located here since 1960. Covered by the lofty mountain peaks on three sides, Dharamshala is also the headquarter of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The town is world famous because of the beautiful Buddhist monasteries, tea gardens and pine trees.

Mcleod Ganj in Dharamshala is the present abode of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. There are a number of Tibetan settlements in Dharamshala. The town is divided into two parts i.e. Upper Dharamshala composed of Mecleod Ganj and Forsyth Ganj, and Lower Dharamshala, which has Kotwali Bazar, courts, business and residential areas. Visitors from all over the world travel to Dharamshala, which also include some Hollywood personalities like Richard Gere.

Climate of Dharamshala

It is located at an altitude of 1457 metres above sea level, covering an area of 29 sq km. Dharamshala is the second wettest place after Cherrapunji in India. Temperature in Dharamshala fluctuates between 22 to 38 degree celsius in summers and can come down to freezing point in winters. The best time for planning a tour to Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, is from March to June and from October to December.

Places of Interest in Dharamshala

War Memorial

The War Memorial is situated at the entrance of Dharamshala. It was constructed to commemorate the memory of those soldiers who fought for the security of Indian soil after attaining independence. The memorial was built in 1972 amidst mesmerising surroundings.

Bhagsunag Waterfall

Bhagsunag waterfall is located at a distance of around 11 km from Dharamshala town. It is one of the main attractions of visitors during their Dharamshala travel. There is also an ancient temple in the vicinity of the waterfall.

St. John's Church

St. John's Church lies on the way from Mcleod Ganj to Forsythe Ganj and at a distance of 8 km from Dharamshala town. It also has a monument dedicated to Lord Elgin, who was one of the Viceroys of India who died at Chauntra in Mandi and was buried in Dharamshala, in 1863. Christian cemetery is also located in the vicinity of the Church.

Norbulinka Institute

Norbulinka Institute is also one of the sought after places by visitors during their Dharamshala tour. It was established to teach and preserve the ancient Tibetan art. It has some of the enchanting wooden carvings, Tangka paintings, goldsithing and embroidery articles.

Dal Lake

Dal Lake is located amidst deodar, rhododendrons and juniper forests. It covers an area of 1 km. Dal Lake is at a distance of around 2 km from Mcleod Ganj market and is visited by a number of visitors every year during their travel to Dharamshala.

Naddi

Naddi is a picnic spot, which is located 5 km away from Mcleod Ganj from where one can have a spectacular view of Kangra valley. It is one of the destinations flocked by a number of tourists during their tour to Dharamshala.
