Discover South Kerala
The southern extremity of Kerala consists of some of the most important sightseeing destinations. It is a home to Thiruvananthapuram – the capital city of Kerala along with the several other sightseeing destinations that includes temples, beaches, zoological parks and museums.
Thiruvananthapuram :
Thiruvananthapuram, the unpretentious capital of Kerala, widely or more commonly known as Trivandrum, is set on the seven low hills, 55 km north of the former capital of Travancore and 87 km from the southern tip of India – Kanyakumari. Washed away by the waves of the Arabian Sea and sprawling across seven hills, Thiruvananthapuram is headed by the western ghats, which stands etched against the horizon. The city is named after Anantha, the five headed serpent, the city once formed a part of the Travancore kingdom, its capital at Padmanabhapuram, now a part of Tamil Nadu.
Thiruvananthapuram is one of the most clean and well planned city in the country. The pristine beaches, magnificent temples, turbulent lakes and the scenic environs add charm to its beauty. Despite its administrative importance, boosts of the immense cultural heritage, which is why museums and rt galleries top the itineraries to this city. The oldest and most interesting part of the town is the fort area in the south, around the Shri Padmanabhaswamy temple and Puttan Malika palace, while important show cases for paintings, crafts and sculpture, Shri Chitra Art Gallery and Napier stands in the north. Apart from that it is also a popular beach destination. For many visitors it is a gateway to Kovalam and Varkala beaches.
Zoological Gardens and Museums :
South Kerala is also a home to number of zoological gardens and museums. The modern zoological gardens are most renowned among them all. There are shaded paths meandering through miles of woodland and lakes, where animals happily carouse in massive, open enclosures that mimic their natural habitats. Entry ticket to he museum is Rs 6, that can be purchased from the ticket counter. Other attractions of the South Kerala includes : Napier Museum, Natural history Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery, which are worth a visit.
Puthe Maliga Palace Museum :
Presenting the finest example of the Keralan architecture, Puthe Maliga Palace Museum is housed in the 200 year old palace of Travancore maharajahs. It took fours years to built this museum. The spell bounding interiors, the carved wooden ceilings, marble sculptures are truly rewarding. You will find Kathakali images, an armory, portraits of maharajahs, ornate thrones and other artefact's.
