Kannur also known as Cannanore, 92 kms from Kozhikode is bounded by the Western Ghats in the east, Arabian Sea in the west, Kasargode district in the north and Mahe district of Pondicherry in the south. It was the once the capital of the Kolathiri rajahs, who prospered from the thriving spice trade through its port. In the early 1550s, the Portuguese arrived at Kannur to erect an imposing bastion, St' Angelo's fort, overlooking the harbor, which today is occupied by the Indian army and is closed for the tourists. Kannur is popularly known for the hand loom and beedi industries. It is the head quarters of the country's largest and beedi cooperative which produces one of the famous brand – Kerala Dinesh Beedi. Apart from that Kerala's finest weavers come from same district.

Dharmadam Island Beach :
Located at the distance of 17 kms from Kannur, Dharmadam is a scenic beach location. Spread to the 5 acre of land, beautified with coconut trees, green bushes and beautiful sights, is also a popular picnic spot among the tourists. Tourists are required to take prior permission to enter this privately owned island.
Payyambalam Beach :
Another most important beach near Kannur is the Payyambalam beach. The major attraction of the beach is beautifully sculpted Mother and Child by Kanayi Kunhiraman. Many famous movies such as Maniratnam's – Alai Payuthe has been shot here.
Thalassery Fort :
Built by the British in 1700, Thalassery Fort, located at the distance of 22 kms from Kannur. It was earlier the military center of the British troops. The fort stands upright on a rocky cliff on the Thalasseri beach. It has massive walls and an imposing structure with a huge gateway. The fort also boosts of the lighthouse along with the cemetery, a church, and the collector's mansion.
Sree Ramaswami temple, Thiruvangadi :
23 kms from Kannur lies the famous Sree Ramaswami temple, which is said to be 400 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Rama and Hanuman. It is 1 kms from the Tellicherry town.
