Indian Railways is the fully owned enterprise of the government of India. The plan to introduce the railways in India was first put forward in the year 1832, but no further step was taken in this direction for more than a decade. Later on the year 1844, the Governor General of India Lord Hardinge allowed private entrepreneurs to set up the railway network in India. This one step changed the history of India. On one-hand it boosted the economy of the country; on the other hand it become the one of the most popular mode of communication among the people from different parts of the country.
Today Indian Railway network is second largest in the world, operating nearly 7,800 services in a day over a route length of nearly 63,000 km. It is one of the busiest railway networks in the world transporting transporting more than 18 million passengers and more than one million tonnes of freight daily. The employment opportunities offered by the Indian Railways are also quite remarkable. More than 1.6 million employees are the part of the Indian Railways.
Indian Railways is the principal mode of transport for the passengers and freight trains. If you want to see the different colors of India, travel by train. You can choose between the heritage trains such as the Palace on Wheels and the Royal Orient, the super-fast Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi train, the quaint, steam hauled 'toy trains' of the hills or the regular trains. Most of the trains run on regular basis but the tourists trains maintains the planned scheduled. Special Heritage trains mainly runs during the peak season especially at the time of festivals and holidays.
The Indian Railway network is the strong holder of the social, cultural and economical norms in the country. It not only removes the distance barrier for its people but also create the felling of oneness among them.
