Ajmer is about Dargah Sharif – one of the famous scared shrine of Muslims in India. It is the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, a sufi fakir who lived in the city about four decades ago and choose it as his last resting place. Not only from Rajasthan, people from all over the world come to pay homage at this mosque.
You do not need a map to find a way to dargah, just stop anywhere and ask for the direction to the dargah or Garib Nawaz, and you will be shown the way to mausoleum that is located beyond the huge constructed red sandstone gate. No vehicle is allowed beyond this gate, one has to walk a one kilometer long road to reach the dargah.
Inside Dargah you will find khadims helping devotees, qawwals reciting paeans to the Saint, dervish appealing for alms, bhisthis offerinf water and pilgrims seeking blessing of Khwaja Moinuddin. In the courtyard you will array of shops selling pink roses that devotees offer to Khwaja. Make a visit to the inner courtyard that houses the grave of the saint. The chamber is encircled by silver railings and marble screen.
The best time to visit Dargah lies in the month of July on the eve of the popular Urs festival, celebrated here for six days in the remembrance of Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti. The opening ceremony of the fair commences with flag hoisting by Sajjada Nashin heir of chistis. The tomb is properly washed by sandalwood paste and rose water and is smeared with scents and perfumes. After decoration, Sajjada Nashinwrap the tomb with shimmering silk cloth. On the last day of the event Fatiha and Salamti are read and Ghusal performed by the Sajjada Nashin.
