Spread to the total area of 26 acres, Swaminarayan Akshardhan is one of the most beautiful temple in India. It is no doubt that in the time to come it will prove to be a mecca for the travelers. It has become one of the major attraction of Delhi and is well known for its beautiful architecture. Akshardham temple is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan; while other deities in the temple includes Shri Sita Ram, Shri Laxmi Narayan, Shri Radha Krishna Dev and Shri Uma Maheshwar.
The temple stands on the huge sandstone blocks and the whole structure is supported fully by complex- carved pink sandstone blocks. Well there is no cement or steel used in its construction, which makes this grand structure testimonial to the perfect amalgamation of ancient and modern architectural styles.
The temple is constructed under the guidance of Bochasanvasi Aksharpurushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) at the cost of Rs 400 crores. It took nearly 1,000 skilled craftsmen more than 12 million man hours to complete its construction on the record time. Apart from major tourists attraction, it is also serves as the educational, cultural and entertainment center. It was completed in the total period of approximately 2 years. Akshardham temple of Delhi is built on the same pattern similar to that of Akshardham Temple in Gujarat. The design of the temple is said to have inspired from ancient Sthaapatya shastras of India.
This 108 foot high structure is made up of 6,000 tons of sandstone, beautified by 234 ornate pillars, exquisitely carved pavilions, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangle Shikharas, intricate floral motifs, along with the magnificent Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants). The innermost chamber of the main hall is adorned by the beautiful idol of Lord Swaminarayan. Another most interesting part inside the temple is the museum showcasing the multi media presentation highlighting the life and teachings of the sage.
Other popular attractions of the temple are its three exhibition halls namely Sahajanand Darshan, Neelkanth Darshan and Sanskruti Vihar. Inside the Sahajanand Darshan you can enjoy the robotic show presented on the life of Swaminarayan, Neelkanth Darsham is equipped with huge I-Max theater screening movie on Swaminarayan's life, while in Sanskruti – you get the opportunity to enjoy the boat ride experiencing the India's glorious heritage.
Akshardham temple is the excellent example of the modern Indian architecture and is a must visit on the tour to Delhi in India.
