Humayun's Tomb History and Architecture


Humayun's Tomb is one of the major landmarks in the city of Delhi. It is must see tomb situated on the main Mathura Road, near it's crossing with Lodi Road. Humayun's Tomb is the Delhi's first Mughal mausoleum, constructed in 1564 after the death of the second Mughal Emperor. It was believed to be commissioned by Haji Begun, the Persian born senior wife of Mughal emperor Humayun. Humayun's Tomb today is one of the best preserved Mughal monuments in Delhi. It is renowned as the World Heritage Site and is the first example of this type of Mughal architecture in India. Being one of the major tourists attraction, it remains open on all days from sunrise to sunset. The best time to visit is between October to March.

History of Humayun's Tomb :

Humayun took over the charge of the Mughal dynasty after the death of his father Babur. But sad;y he could enjoy his kingdom for the long time. He died in an incident as he feel from the stairs of his library. His widow wife Haji Begum, took over the charge of constructing a tomb for her husband. The credit of designing the Humayun's tomb goes to famous Persian Architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath.

Architecture of Humayun's Tomb :


It took approximately nine years to complete this complex structure. Constructed of red sandstone, inlaid with black and white marble, on a commanding podium, looking towards the Yamuna, it stands in the center of the formal charbagh or quartered garden. It was built in accordance to the Indo Islamic architecture. The octagonal structure is crowned with a double dome that soars to a height of 38 m – the inner shell forms the vaulted ceiling. Porches on each side rises to 12.2 meter high pointed arches, flanked by outer bays and recessed windows with lattice screens of stone and marble. Below the cenotaph, inside the building, are the graves of Humayun and Haji Begum.

Tourists can also check out the Nila Gumbad, an octagonal tomb with a dome of blue prints , believed to built by the Akbar's nobles to honor a faithful servant. Another major attraction here is the impressive square mausoleum, with a double dome and two graves bearing Koranic inscriptions, is of Humayun's barber.

How to get there :

Humayun's tomb is very close to the Cannaught place. Tourists can take the auto, bus, car or taxi to reach the tomb.
