The pristine beach, numerous fishing villages and lot of adventure activities are all there to charm you. There are plenty of excursion options around Kovalam.
Samudra Beach :
Samudra beach , about 4 km by road from Kovalam beach is the quietest beach in Kerala. It is also very small in size , with a couple of resorts jostling for space with local fishing villages. It is considered as the ideal location for walking, relaxing and sun bathing. In some areas the tides are very strong, so it is not as good for swimming. Near to the Samudra beach is the Kovalam Sri Dharmasastha temple, that attract heap of tourists mainly during the annual festival that is held in the month of January. For the purpose of information it opens only on Fridays and on Aayilyam days of Malayalam months.
Thiruvallom :
Thiruvallom is located at the distance of 8 km from Kovalam. It is where Killi and Karamana rivers meet. It is the excellent location for boats rides, that are can arranged from the Thiruvallom Boat Club at the cost of Rs 300. It is also known for the famous Parasurama temple, the only temple in Kerala, dedicated to legendary creator of Kerala.
Valliathura Pier :
he Valliathura Pier is an interesting place to visit. It is located at a distance of 10 kilo meters from Kovalam. It is must visit during monsoons because it is during this time when local fishermen cannot launch their boat from the beach, head towards the edge of the pier.
Chowara :
Another sightseeing destination located around Kovalam is Chowara, which is a fishing village. The main highlight of the region is the Chowara Ayyappa Temple located on the hilltop, overlooking the beach. Tourists can also make a visit to the Azhimalathura Beach that has identified as the only beach in Kerala where the sea is not eating into the coast , but is actually receding.
Vizhinjam Village :
Located at the distance of 2 km from Kovalam, is a polar fishing village. It offers number of attractions that are worth a visit. The most important among these are Vizhinjam Cave Temple with complete carvings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the outside and one celled shrine inside. Than you can check out the Marine Aquarium that houses a wide variety of marine life like squirrel fish, moon wrasse, butterfly fish, lion fish and giant turtles. The aquarium has also a unique display in form of pearl images of Christ, Virgin Mary, Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Both the temple and the aquarium are open from 9 am to 6 pm.
