Munnar is a beautiful hill station that serves as a central point for exploring the magnificent mountain region surrounding it. Several of the summits towering above the town can be reached by trekking through the lavish tea gardens. Munnar waterways offer boating facilities and the pleasant walks in any direction offer some of the spectacular views. Anamudi, the highest peak in south India (2695m) is a ideal spot for trekking and mountain climbing. Eravikulam National Park 16 km from Munnar, is the center of Nilgiri Tahr. Marayoor, 32 km away has the natural growth of sandalwood trees. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 58 km away and the world renowned Indo- Swiss project of Mattuppetty is close by. Some of the other attractions around Munnar include Pothamedu (6 km), Devikulam (7 km), Pallivasal (8 km), Attukal (9 km) and Chithirapuram (10 km).
Marayoor :
Marayoor located at the distance of 40 km from Munnar, is the only place in Kerala that has the natural growth of sandalwood trees. Apart from that it houses some of the natural caves with murals and relics from Later Stone Age Civilization. Tourists can make a visit to the sandalwood factory of the Forest Department of Kerala and to the Children’s Park spreading across hectare of land under the canopy of single Banyan tree.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary :
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, stretching over 90 sq kms of evergreen tropical forests, lies in the Idukki district of Kerala. Chinnar houses some of the some most rare and endangered species of plants and animals not found anywhere else in the world. The pulsating wildlife and scenic environs make it one of the most sought after destination around Munnar. The major attractions of the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary includes tigers, elephant, bonnet macaques, gaur, Kraits, spotted deer, spectacled cobras, sambar, turtles, vipers, little cormorants, darters and black eagles. It is also the perfect place for boating and trekking.
Neelakurunji :
Munnar is most famous among the tourists as the region where Neelakurunji grows. . It flowers only once in every twelve years. The next flowering is due in Oct/Nov 2016. During the blossom period tourist from far and wide visit Munnar to view the extra-ordinary phenomenon of the nature.
Kolukkumalai Estate :
Kolukkumalai, located at the distance of 35 km from Munnar, retains the best natural scenery. It is one of the most reputed tea estate, tucked at the height of 2400 m above the sea level. The region produces some of the excellent teas, prized for the delicate flavor. One can reach the estate by taking a jeep safari, via Chinnakanal Suryanelly Estate.
Nyayamakad :
Nyayamakad 10 km from Munnar, attract heap of tourists all around the year. It is equally popular both among the locals as well as among the tourists. The scenic environment make it an ideal location for making picnic. Nyayamakad is a land of scintillating waterfalls that fall from the height of 1600 meters. Apart from soft adventure, it is also a perfect destination for extreme adventure like trekking.
Pallivasal :
Pallivasal is the venue of the first Hydro Electric Project in Kerala, blessed with immense scenic beauty.
Devikulam :
Devikulam an idyllic hill station, is located at an latitude of 1800 m above the sea level. It lies at an distance of 16 km from Munnar. Devikulam is paradise of nature lovers. The major highlight of the region is the enticing Sita Devi lake, cascading Pallivasal Waterfalls and miles of spread tea gardens.
