The Yellow Dress Trend

Trend of the Week

Yellow Dresses

Bright yellow dresses are an emerging trend that have been spreading sunshine all over the Spring/Summer 2012 runways. From New York to Milan Fashion Week, varying shades of yellow have been a favourite with designers.

Yellow is no longer just a daytime-summer-sundress type of colour. It has streamed over into formal wear, with elegant floor-length gowns in silky, flowing fabrics and sparkly embellishments. Yellow is a colour that suits most skin tones and hair colours, the trick is to find the right shade for you. Brighter yellows looked striking against darker skin tones and on brunettes. Soft, buttery shades flatter paler skins and blondes. If you're not keen on a fluorescent tint, try out a subtle lemonade shade.

Celebrities that Started the Yellow Trend

Yellow made a vibrant splash on the red carpet this past week. It's rare that we get to see starlets wear yellow evening gowns, but this year, it seems to be the Awards Season colour. You may recall seeing some of these looks.

Julia Kurbatova in a lemon one shouldered gown with hip flounce at the Golden Globes.
Charlize Theron looked graceful in a floral embroidered Stella McCartney ensemble.
Maria Menounos shimmers in a mustard yellow sequined Blumarine column gown.
Elizabeth Olsen wore an intricately beaded Emilio Pucci mini at the People's Choice Awards.
Mireille Enos in a vivid yellow beaded gown by Naeem Khan at the Golden Globe Awards.

Minka Kelly looked beautiful in a neon yellow Oscar de la Renta dress.
Yvonne Strahovski chose a simple silk chiffon daffodil gown by Jenni Kayne.
Camilla Belle stunned in a layered silk organza primrose yellow gown by Carolina Herrera.
Paula Patton at the Golden Globes in a sunflower strapless Monique Lhuillier gown.

Who Wore Proenza Schouler Better?

Who Wore It Better?
Proenza Schouler Fall 2011 Dress

I first saw this kaleidoscopic jigsaw print Proenza Schouler dress on 6 June this year, when Liv Tyler wore it to the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City. Liv represented the Proenza Schouler fashion brand at the awards show, where the team took home the award for 'Womenswear Designer of the Year'. Five months later, style darling Olivia Palermo was spotted on the streets of NYC wearing the same dress. It's interesting to see that Olivia would wear this dress on a random day out, while Liv savoured it for the red carpet.

Olivia Palermo takes a moment to pose in the puzzle print halter neck dress. She wore a long black coat over it, with ankle boots by Bakers Flare.
Liv Tyler wore the belted dress as it was seen on the catwalk. The folded detail on the front of the dress is more visible on her. She carried a black clutch and stood in strappy heels, both by Proenza Schouler.
Canadian model Kelsey van Mook walked the runway in the multicoloured silk dress, wearing it with black multi-strap sandals.

I prefer this look on Olivia, simply because of her styling. The print and colours are very bold and I think she simmered it down well with the black coat and boots. What are your thoughts?

Dress Déja Vu

Take a look at the yellow skirt and blouse worn by Blake Lively and Nikki Reed below. Both have a luminous yellow colour. Check. Three quarter sleeves with rolled up cuffs. Check. Button-up front shirt with collar. Check. Pockets on shirt. Check. Knee-length pleated skirt. Check. So it's the same outfit then? Not exactly...

Blake Lively wore this yellow shirt and skirt by Chloe back in June, to the 'Green Lantern' press conference. She added a skinny belt and black Brian Atwood ankle-strap pumps.
Nikki Reed wore a yellow shirt and skirt by Jenni Kayne to the 'Wired' store launch party yesterday (17 November). She also wore Brian Atwood pumps, in a nude shade.

The difference? The Chloe skirt is slightly longer on the model, and has more pleats. Blake's skirt seems to have the length altered.

Who made it first? Chloe. The sunny yellow ensemble is from Chloe's Pre-Fall 2011 Collection, while the Jenni Kayne outfit is from the designer's Resort 2012 range. Another case of different designer, same idea. Have you also got 'Dress Déja Vu?

Who Wore Salvatore Ferragamo Better?

Who Wore It Better?

Salvatore Ferragamo Houndstooth Dress

This is a WWIB battle of epic proportions. Six leading ladies from all corners of the globe have fallen for the hypnotic charms of this Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2011 houndstooth dress. The long sleeved black and white wrap dress has a deep plunge neck and slight front slit. I usually love houndstooth print, but this is getting a bit much...

1. Australian actress Teresa Palmer wore the dress first on 28 June 2011, while attending Salvatore Ferragamo's Resort 2012 presentation. She paired it with a box clutch, embellished belt and black heels by Ferragamo. Teresa kept her hair straight, with natural makeup.
2. Fashion-frenzied Lady Gaga wore houndstooth from hat-to-heel for an appearance on 'The View' on 1 August. Her hat, outlandish sunglasses, clutch bag and pumps were all in sync with her Ferragamo dress. She added strings of pearls for more drama.
3. Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing wore the dress next, within the same week as Gaga. She opted to wear the dress to the Ferragamo 'Attimo' fragrance launch in Beijing. Fan accessorized with black platform heels and a black sling bag. She added an air of mystique with a black netted hat. Her jet black locks were ironed out, her makeup almost theatrical.
4. Australian model Jessica Hart took her Ferragamo frock out on the town during Fashion's Night Out in New York on 8 September. Jessica accompanied her look with a statement bejeweled choker, black clutch and pointy-toe Ferragamo heels. Her hair was up in a high bun.
5. Vogue Japan editor Anna Dello Russo wore the dress during Milan Fashion Week in late September. She tossed on a flamboyant feathered hat, garnished with a large pink rose. At 48, she wears this dress as well as the younger dames. I like the two-tone heels with it. She carries the same Ferragamo houndstooth clutch as Lady Gaga.
6. Kim Kardashian is never one to miss out on a trend. She wore the wrap dress last week, on 7 October, for a television interview in New York City. This is the simplest from all the looks, as Kim chose neutral black accessories and wore her hair in a slicked black ponytail. The bold red lipstick is a great addition.

The dress as shown on the runway, worn by Italian model Bianca Balti

As for 'Who Wore it Best', this is a tough one. I like the fit on Anna, along with her black and white heels. But I prefer it with simple hair and styling like Kim's. What are your thoughts?

Who Wore Alberta Ferretti Better?

Who Wore It Better?

A Gossip Girl or Latina Actress

This first time I spotted this gorgeous pink Alberta Ferretti dress, was in April this year, when the beautiful Camilla Belle wore it for a red carpet event. Forward five months and the same dress appears in a scene of Gossip Girl, worn by our favourite television fashionista, Blair Waldorf. The pretty pink dress is from Alberta Ferretti's Fall 2011 collection, and features a tie-up halter neck and embellished doubled tiered skirt.

Left: Camilla Belle wore the salmon pink dress to the 'Good Housekeeping Annual Shine On Awards' on 12 April in New York City. Camilla accessorized with a black Salvatore Ferragamo clutch bag, Cartier jewels and two-toned ankle-strap heels by Christian Louboutin.
Right: Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) is styled in the chiffon frock for an episode of the upcoming season of Gossip Girl. She paired her dress with cream tweed Moschino jacket trimmed with frills and pearls. Blair carries a quilted Marc Jacobs handbag and walks in Roger Vivier buckle-front court heels, both in similar neutral shades.

The dress as shown on the runway by German model Luisa Bianchin. It is worn with thigh-high charcoal grey boots.

Camilla wore her hair in a slightly messy updo, while Blair added a matching Carissa pink fascinator to her sleek hair style.

Even though I am a a fan of both stylistas, I'm going to go with Blair on this one. Her outfit is styled in a way that is not typical or predictable. I prefer her accessories as well. I had liked this dress from the moment I saw it on Camilla. But after seeing Blair in it, I like it a whole lot better. She takes the original dress and gives it so much more life and character.

Who Wore Marc Jacobs Better?

Who Wore It Better?

Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 Dress

Two pretty actresses from two sides of the globe were seen wearing the same Marc Jacobs dress, which is from the designer's Fall 2011 collection. The knee-length navy blue lace dress has a scalloped neckline, sleeves and hem.

Left: Australian actress Rose Bryne wore the long-sleeved dress first to the premiere of 'X Men: First Class' in New York on 25 May 2011. She carried a matching navy Kotur clutch bag and wore nude platform pumps by Brian Atwood. Her eyes were lined with black, while the rest of her make up was kept subtle.

Right: South Korean actress Sung Yuri wore the dress to the Marc Jacobs Fall fashion show in Seoul on Tuesday this week. She complemented her red Marc Jacobs clutch bag with scarlet lips. Sung paired her dress with sheer polka dot tights and chunky black ankle-strap heels.

The dress as shown on the runway by Chinese model Fei Fei Sun. It was styled with an elaborate red neckpiece, the sheer spotted stockings and long black boots.

I like the dress on both ladies, but prefer it without the tights. Ideally, I would pair it with Rose's nude heels and Sung's red clutch bag. What do you think?

Which Kardashian Sister Wore It Better?

Who Wore The Myne Dress Better?

Kim or Khloe?

The Kardashian sisters share a lot of things; homes, friends, fame, an unabashed love of attention and the same taste in clothes. Kim and Khloe were seen in the same Myne silk dress but in two different colours. The $126 (R920) dress has a plunging surplice neckline, rope leather belt, gathered elasticated waist and draped skirt.

Khloe wore the bubblegum pink version of the dress last week on the streets of Los Angeles. Kim's younger sister added black accessories to her look, including a black Hermés Birkin bag and black and leopard print fully strapped stilettos. The same pink dress was worn by Tika Sumpter (Raina from Gossip Girl) in July.
Kim wore the the cream toga-style dress to her wedding-fragrance photo shoot at the beginning of August. Her look was dressier, with a gold cuff, and collar necklace. She wore flat embellished Sam Edelman sandals with it.

I prefer Kim's look, she styled the dress in a way that brings out it's Grecian-like appeal. What do you think?

Celeb Style - Seeing Stripes

This week had me seeing stripes on the streets of Celebsville, with this navy and red nautical Express dress. This versatile piece looks comfy and suits just about everyone. It retails for $49.90 (R360), and can be bought here.

At the end of July, a pregnant January Jones wore the t-shirt dress with embellished thong sandals, red-rimmed sunglasses and a Chanel bag.
In early August, Amanda Seyfried was spotted in the cotton dress, also paired with thong sandals and sunnies.
A week later, Olivia Munn wore the three quarter-sleeved dress to the 'Teen Choice Awards' after party in LA. I don't like it with the fawn suede boots.
I think Zoe Saldana wore it best this Tuesday, with a tan sling Coach bag, skinny tan belt and flat thong sandals.
Emmy Rossum was seen in the same dress on the same day, at the same time and at the same shopping venue as Zoe! She wore it with a straw hat and thong sandals too.

I can see many versions of this dress greeting us in stores this summer. How will you wear it?

The Orange Dress Trend

Trendspotting

The Little Orange Dress

Firstly, I must admit that my least favourite colour is orange. The only thing orange that I own is a pencil, and that wasn't by choice. Secondly, orange, in it's brightest, boldest form is a Huge trend for the upcoming season. Sigh...I'm either going to have to embrace it or put on a pair of dark sunglasses to avoid the orangy glare.

Runway

Orange dresses made a citrusy splash all over international runways for Spring 2011. The preferred shade by designers was tangerine. Silhouettes were kept simple, without many coloured accessories.

Celeb Style
Reese Witherspoon wears a Hanii Y mini with ruffled collar. Nude Christian Louboutin wedges accompany her dress.

Eva Longoria was spotted in a $35 apricot egg-shaped dress from ASOS, which she paired with matching Brian Atwood pumps.

Kristen Cavallari glows in Miami, wearing a simple shift dress in fiery orange by Diesel. Her nude sandals are by Sergio Rossi.

Cheryl Cole wears a 3/4 sleeved version of the Little Orange Dress with pockets, which is by Giambattista Valli. Her T-bar sandals are by Giuseppe Zanotti.

Jessica Chastain wears a nectarine orange sheath dress by Bottega Veneta. She spiced it up with a stunning pair of pink & red sandals.

Katie Cassidy in a fruity mango shade, wears a fitted mini by Hervé Legér. Snakeskin Jimmy Choo pumps and clutch accessorized her look.

Emma Stone proves that redheads can also wear orange. Her short-sleeved Luca Luca dress is worn with peachy suede pumps by Brian Atwood.

Kate Bosworth wears a pair of black ankle boots and black sling bag with her persimmon shift dress, by Calvin Klein.

Get The Look

If you find that you're pro-orange, here are a few pretty dresses that you can add to your spring wardrobe.

1. The Office Dress. A tailored cotton sateen dress with pleated collar and cap sleeves. It's nipped in the waist with a matching belt. Wear it with high nude or animal print heels. $105 or R765 from Oasis

2. The Designer Dress. A silk shirtdress featuring epaulets on the shoulders and a tie-up belt. Wear it alone or over a pair of skinny jeans. This 'Jafartha' minidress is by Diane von Furstenberg. $385 or R2747 from Nordstrom

3. The Retro Dress. A youthful take on the orange trend with a 50's style fit and flare mini. This structured skater dress can be paired with black accessories for a retro-rock inspired look. $95 or R678 from Topshop

4. The Weekend Dress. A comfy and casual dress by Whistles, with round neck, 3/4 sleeves, pockets and a gathered skirt. It has a waffle-weave cotton finish. It can be worn with a blazer or leather jacket, fedora and ankle boots. £95 or R1102 from Asos

5. The Girly Dress. A sleeveless deep coral dress with ruffle tie-up neck and ruched waist. Wear with a pretty pair of gold heels and a clutch bag. £12 or R145 from Dorothy Perkins

6. The Everyday Dress. A simple silk-crepe summer dress that can be worn on any occasion. This House of Holland dress has an asymmetrical hemline and a digital Harris tweed print. Belt it, wear it with a printed scarf, wedges, flats or heels. £195 or R2262 from Asos

Tips on wearing the trend
*An orange dress paired with orange accessories is a recipe for a satsuma-like disaster. Stick to neutral shoes, belts and bags in brown, black, white or tan. For a refreshing twist, add purple, pink or turquoise.
*To choose the correct shade of orange for your skin tone; hold the dress up to your face, if it brightens your complexion, that's the colour for you. It if leaves you looking pallid and dull, try a different shade.
*A fake orange tan + an orange dress = the human carrot.
*Gold jewellery adds a glamorous touch.
*Orange dresses in a luxurious fabric and sophisticated design can replace your LBD for stylish summer nights.
*Make up should be kept minimal; neutral toned eye-shadow, sienna blush and a light coloured lipstick or gloss.

Celeb Style - The Little Black Dress

Celebrity Style

The LBD

The Little Black Dress has been a favourite with celebrities on and off the red carpet this week. There were so many versions of this classic closet piece on display, as pictured below.

Jenna Dewan looks polished at the TCA Press Tour All-Star Party in LA. The brunette actress wore a strapless lace Dolce & Gabbana dress with sweetheart neckline. Her accessories included Giuseppe Zanotti peep toe sandals and a bejeweled clutch bag.

Mila Kunis looked posh leaving a London restaurant. Her tuxedo halter neck wrap dress is by Calvin Klein. Great addition of the skinny gold belt and gorgeous blue and gold Christian Louboutin pumps. She carried a denim blue Chanel bag.

Dianna Agron was pictured on her way to the David Letterman show in New York. She wears my favourite LBD of the week. Her Stella McCartney velvet dress features a high round neck with sweetheart bodice, and peplum flounce. Yves Saint Laurent 'Tribtoo' heels finish her look.

Sarah Michelle Gellar chose a simple black sleeveless sheath by Givenchy. She wears the metallic bronze version of Dianna Agron's Yves Saint Laurent 'Tribtoo' pumps (pictured above). She holds a black beaded clutch bag.

Emma Stone also made an appearance on the David Letterman show in a little black dress. Her Azzaro LBD had long cuffed sleeves and criss-cross detail on the neckline. I like the colour of her burgundy Brian Atwood pumps.

Amber Heard posed for a picture at NBC's 2011 TCA Summer Press Tour in Los Angeles. Her black dress by Honor has a plunging v-neck and full A-line skirt. Her nude satin pumps are by Brian Atwood. I feel like her outfit is in need of some accessories.

Pretty Peach Dresses

I was delighted by these two dresses that were worn on the red carpet this week, which are in my current colour crush, peach.

Left: Community actress Gillian Jacobs looks sweet in a silk organza dress with delicate frills by Christian Dior. She carried a Jimmy Choo 'Cosma' clutch and slipped into black Christian Louboutin sling-backs with origami detailing.
Right: Alexa Vega attended the 'Spy Kids 4D' premiere in LA. She looked lovely in a subtle peach sleeveless dress by Keepsake, with nude patent heels by Yves Saint Laurent and a sparkly clutch bag.

'Mad Men' Collection at Banana Republic

Do you have wardrobe envy each time you watch an episode of Mad Men? Now you too can get that 60's secretary look with the launch of Banana Republic's new 'Mad Men' inspired collection. The American fashion brand have teamed up with Emmy Award-winning Costume Designer, Janie Bryant to create a classic collection for both men and women. Janie is the creative architect behind the wardrobe of the hit TV series, which is based on the cutthroat world of advertising in 1960's New York.

The collection features the best of retro designs, including high-waisted skirts, trench coats, empire-line dresses, fitted sheath dresses, blouses and cardigans. Outfits are accessorized with strings of pearls, scarves, gloves and sheer black stockings. I love the abundance of leopard print in this range.

A lovely leopard print trench coat is worn over a cream lace dress, belted in black. A vibrant orange and grey silk print dress with pockets. A burgundy A-line dress is accessorized with a leopard print scarf and sheer black polka dot stockings. I love the rich jewel tone of the flair ruby skirt, quaintly paired with a leopard print cardigan, lace top and elegant pearls.

Shades of blue are dabbed into a printed knee-length dress. A black blouse with pussycat bow is worn under a caramel leopard print cardigan, with light grey cropped trousers. A slate grey pea coat with matching skirt is given a vintage twist with black leather gloves and a printed turban head scarf. A timeless Little Black Dress that will remain trendy for years to come.

Menswear is not my forte, but I do like the look of these classy black and grey suits. The debonair mensline includes two-button suits, vests, trench coats, a series of ties, knitted jerseys, crisp white shirts and tailored trousers.

This collection may have been inspired by a bygone fashion era, but these pieces all have a worthy place in the wardrobes of today's stylish working men and women. The Banana Republic 'Mad Men' Collection will be available this month from bananarepublic.com

The Red Lace Dress Trend

Trend Spotting

The Red Lace Dress

The red lace dress has been a favourite amongst celebrities, stylists and models. The subject of this trend is a 3/4 or long sleeved dress, with round neck and hemline above the knee. The vintage-inspired red lace dress has a babydoll shape, whereas the modern version is more fitted. The colour ranges from coral to scarlet to deep burgundy.

Celebrities that are on board with the red lace dress trend.

Top Row
Rachel Bilson shoots a campaign for Sunglasses Hut wearing a French Connection Fast Anna lace dress. She styled it with sheer black stockings and black suede ankle boots.
Britain's newest style icon, Pippa Middleton wears a long-sleeved version of the dress, also by French Connection.

Bottom Row
Michelle Williams wears the most popular of all red lace dresses, by Erdem. She added leopard print heels to the mix. The dress has been sold-out everywhere.
Alexa Chung wears the same Erdem 'Margot' dress for a spread in Net-a-Porter magazine. The dress looks so different on both ladies.
Isla Fisher went for a darker shade of lace, in a sparkly, high-neck dress by Elise Øverland.

Who Wore Chanel Better?

Who Wore it Better?

Chanel Dresses at the Royal Wedding

Chanel was the royal family's designer of choice at this weekend's wedding in Monaco. Two of Prince Albert's nieces wore Chanel dresses, which were both incidentally worn before by Hollywood celebrities. I find this quite strange, as these princesses-in-waiting have access to the world's best couture collections and the most exclusive designs. Why would they chose to wear outfits that were previously worn, and to Monaco's most anticipated event in the last 50 years?

Charlotte Casiraghi, daughter of Princess Caroline, wore a Chanel Spring Couture 2011 dress to her uncle, Prince Albert's wedding this Saturday. The blush pink off-the-shoulder dress has a tiered skirt, pearl buttoned bodice and black bow on the hip. Actress Diane Kruger first wore the dress almost 6 months ago, to a gala in Paris. Both ladies paired the dress with black clutch bags and high black heels. Charlotte's sandals are by YSL and Diane's are Jimmy Choo. I think Diane looks more polished, as the dress fits her better.

Pauline Ducruet, daughter of Princess Stephanie attended the wedding in a dress from Chanel's Spring 2011 RTW line. The sky blue fringed tweed dress has a Lemarié feather trim skirt. Emma Roberts wore the dress first in March, during Paris Fashion Week. Both girls paired the dress with white clutch bags. Pauline wore strappy white sandals and a skinny belt, while Emma chose metallic silver Brian Atwood heels. Emma rocks this dress, she has the personality to pull it off.
